Posters slamming ‘Talibanisation’ appear in Karachi areas

LAHORE: Hundreds of posters condemning the Talibanisation in Karachi were seen on walls across the provincial capital on Saturday, a satellite channel reported.
The posters contained gruesome images of severed heads and mutilated limbs, Dawn News reported, adding that most of the posters were found in North Karachi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad and Gul Baharabad areas of country’s financial hub. The posters put on walls by ‘citizens of Karachi’ did not contain the name of any organisation or group, the channel added, saying that the posters had sparked a debate about the threat of Talibanisation in Karachi.
MQM, ANP: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Raza Haroon said Karachi was facing the threat of Talibanisation. He added that various reports of threats to truck drivers supplying oil to NATO forces in Afghanistan had been received. The Awami National Party (ANP) however denied that there existed any tangible threat to the city. ANP leader Amin Khattak said the Taliban would be exposed if they were present in the city.

According to Geo News, the Investigation committee from the MQM believed an increase in Talibanisation had occurred in Karachi. Influential elements from the establishment were involved in conspiracies against the city, the committee said.A statement issued by the MQM Co-ordination Committee said MQM chief Altaf Hussain had warned the administration about the growing threat of extremism in the city. The committee claimed that wife of former Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Aziz, Umme Hassan, visited Karachi on July31 and distributed certificates among students of jihadi seminaries urging them to participate in jihad.

WASHINGTON: The use of suicide bombings has allowed religiously radical forces to reach beyond their NWFP strongholds and strike with impunity at the core of Pakistan, including urban centres, and as it is, things are spinning out of control, according to a commentary released on Monday by Stratfor.
The Texas-based news intelligence service notes that along with the rapidly deteriorating security situation, political instability has only grown after the elections, which failed to quell the political unrest that severely weakened not only President Pervez Musharraf's hold on power but also that of the army.
Civil-military hybrid: "Musharraf's regime has been replaced by a civil-military hybrid which lacks the willingness and/or the ability to take on the threat posed by extremism and militancy. The fact is that the civilian government and the country's military establishment appear to be losing control of the situation," the analysis maintains.
Will the Paki's allow Pakistan to deteroriate into an Iraq, circa 2004? I don't expect the new Paki government to react or ask for help untill they experience sever pain, and their pain threshold is higher than I expected.
Pakistani troops last night ousted Islamic militants from strongholds near the Khyber Pass, the main supply route for British troops in Afghanistan, a day after the government launched a major offensive.
The operation was the first by the new government of Pakistan since it defeated allies of President Pervez Musharraf in elections in February and then began controversial peace talks with the Taliban.
"It has been a successful operation. No collateral damage has been reported. The writ of the government has been established," said Rehman Malik, Pakistan's Interior Ministry chief.
Mr Malik said the operation had safeguarded the main northwestern city of Peshawar from Islamist vigilantes who have terrorised local residents and also raided trucks carrying supplies for Nato and US forces across the border.
Black flags over Bara town signal militant support BARA (June 30 2008): Black flags with a sword emblazoned across them were flying above many of the mud-walled homes in the town of Bara on Sunday in a show of support for a militant who government forces are out to get.
The flags were those of the Lashkar-i-Islami, or Army of Islam in north-west Pakistan's Khyber region, a wedge of tan-coloured mountains speckled with small trees sandwiched between the city of Peshawar and the Afghan border.
Security forces launched an offensive on Saturday to push members of the militant group, led by a commander called Mangal Bagh, from the approaches of Peshawar after Bagh's men began making forages into the city to impose their Taliban-style ways.
A former bus driver with little education, Bagh, who is in his mid-40s, appears to have won support the same way the Afghan Taliban did when they emerged in the early 1990s and sorted out war lords and criminals preying on the people.
"He brought peace and got rid of the criminals in our area. He's good for us," Mehboob said.
Bara was peaceful on Sunday with a surprisingly light security presence. Despite a curfew, some people were out in its main market although most stalls were shut.
There was no evidence of any militants and no one was seen carrying a gun in a region where most men own a rifle. Some soldiers drove around in double-cabin pick-up trucks and a few armoured personnel carriers patrolled the dusty streets but security forces made no effort to stop curious residents going out to see the ruins of Bagh's office and a four-room mud house, both near the market, that soldiers blew up on Saturday.
A senior government official said there had been no violence in the area since Saturday evening and a Reuters reporter heard no gun shots or explosions in Bara or along the lightly guarded road from Peshawar. Among those out on the streets was Bagh's older brother, the grey-bearded Soocha Gul, who is in his early 50s. "It's a shame, barbaric," an angry Gul said of the destruction of his brother's buildings.
"They came suddenly, asked us to vacate the house immediately and then blew it up. What crime did our women and children commit?" he asked. Bagh's militants are not allied with the main Pakistani Taliban group and they have not been known to head off to Afghanistan to fight Western troops there.

PESHAWAR: The NWFP is passing through a dangerous period as the Taliban are entering the provincial capital, concerned treasury and opposition members of the NWFP Assembly noted on Thursday.
"The Taliban are converging on Peshawar city from all directions. It's a devastating situation. We are worried," Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)'s Javed Abbasi told the House on a point of order.
Abbasi said there was a high-level meeting on Wednesday night in Islamabad and the province was abuzz the whole night with rumours of a military operation. "We want to ask the government whether the army will launch an operation against the militants in the Tribal Areas or settled areas," said the PML-N MPA.
Abbasi said that on one hand the provincial government was signing peace accords while on the other, the federal government was launching military operations against militants.
The PML-N member asked the federal government if it had achieved desired results in past military operations and whether it was re-launching the army operation in the province. Abbasi said it was a serious issue over which the population should be consulted, and that the matter should be debated in the House.
Former chief minister and leader of the opposition Akram Khan Durrani endorsed Abbasi's views. "It's an important issue and as such it be discussed in the House. We'll give proposals," said Durrani who is from the JUI-F.
Senior Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Minister Rahim Dad Khan said the coalition government was faced with challenges and that it was signing peace agreements with militants.
He added that the coalition government would sign peace accords with those surrendering weapons. "We'll initiate dialogue with those who want to become honourable citizens," said the senior minister.
Senior minister: Rahim said some elements were giving the impression that peace accords with militants had failed, which was not true. "We'll honour the peace agreements and provide protection to our citizens," said the PPP leader holding the portfolio of planning and development.
The senior minister said the coalition government would take the House into confidence and take steps on the law and order issue.
The House is likely to debate the Taliban issue on private member's day on July 1 or 2. Some opposition members have submitted adjournment motions on the issue.

The parents of a blind seven-year-old who was sent to a religious school in Pakistan have told how he was hung by his feet from a ceiling and beaten to death after failing to memorise the Koran.
The parents of Mohammed Atif admitted that they had ignored their son Mohammed's repeated complaints about abuse at the madrassah.
Police in the Punjab province said that Mohammed's religious teacher, Qari Ziauddin, was now in custody charged with torturing and murdering the boy on Thursday.
Police said Ziauddin, whose title "Qari" signifies he is a mullah, had suspended the boy from a ceiling fan for an hour before he beat him. When he realised how badly Mohammed was hurt, he apparently fled instead of taking him to hospital. ............... The boy's body was not discovered until the next day when fellow pupils, including Mohammed's cousin, realised he had not slept in his bed. They searched the madrassah and found his battered corpse in Ziauddin's room.
An autopsy concluded that Mohammed, who was blind from birth, died of severe head injuries and also found marks of "physical torture" on his body. Police said the fatal blow might have been caused by Ziauddin dropping the boy when he cut him down from the fan.
According to the boy's father, the teacher had previously smashed him over the head with an iron rod, cutting him so badly that he needed stitches.

The killing has sparked concerns for the welfare of the 1.5 million students in the country's 13,000 madrassahs, which are regarded as potential recruiting grounds for al-Qa'eda and the Taliban.
In 2002 President Pervez Musharraf responded to international concerns by ordering madrassahs to adopt a more modern curriculum. But religious hardliners have stymied many of the reforms, and their refusal to allow state regulation has also seen the schools develop an reputation for child abuse.
While officialdom often turns a blind eye, the sheer brutality of the latest case has led the new prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, to order an inquiry.
Police said the other children who attend the Qari Latif madrassah in Vihari, 150 miles southwest of Lahore, have all been withdrawn.
Investigators said Ziauddin had admitted the assault and claimed such brutality was normal. "We punish students who don't learn their lessons," he told detectives. "We used to get similar beatings when we were studying in the same schools. It is not uncommon."...

KOTKAI, Pakistan — Pakistan's top Taliban leader said Saturday that he is sending fighters to battle U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Addressing reporters invited to a hideout in South Waziristan, Baitullah Mehsud said his group "sincerely wants" peace talks with the new Pakistani government to succeed. But he said the holy war would continue until U.S. forces leave Afghanistan.
Curbs on Musharraf? The senior party in Pakistan's ruling coalition unveiled a package of constitutional reforms aimed at sharply reducing President Pervez Musharraf's powers. The president no longer would have the power to dissolve parliament or appoint provincial governors and the head of the military. Asif Ali Zardari, head of the Pakistan People's Party, said the reforms would be put before lawmakers by late June.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Taliban cleric Faqir Mohammed is tall, thin, very serious and very religious. His eyes are hard and he speaks slowly. He never smiles.

The United States is stepping up its attacks on al Qaeda targets in Pakistan, largely without coordination with that country's government.
The United States has escalated its unilateral strikes against al-Qaeda members and fighters operating in Pakistan's tribal areas, partly because of anxieties that Pakistan's new leaders will insist on scaling back military operations in that country, according to U.S. officials. Washington is worried that pro-Western President Pervez Musharraf, who has generally supported the U.S. strikes, will almost certainly have reduced powers in the months ahead, and so it wants to inflict as much damage as it can to al-Qaeda's network now, the officials said.
Under the current terms the Paki Gov has with the Taliban the Government has withdrawn troops from the border areas, allowing for the possibility of HOT pursuit of Taliban on the border areas.

According to the report, the Taliban spokesman said that as part of the peace agreement being worked out, Pakistani Taliban are not barred from carrying out attacks on NATO and U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He said that the recent release of Islamist leader Maulana Sufi Muhammad from prison was part of a deal with the government.

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician and Tehreek-e-Insaf party president Imran Khan has said that President Pervez Musharraf should be hanged for ordering the military operation in the Islamabad-based Red Mosque last year. The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jang quoted Imran Khan as saying: "On the issue of the Red Mosque [operation], President Musharraf should be hanged [because he] committed extreme atrocities on girls and children in order to endear [himself to] the United States."
Activists Demand Release Of Nuclear Scientist Dr. Qadeer Khan Activists of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party hold placards demanding the release of Pakistani nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, who is in detention after he admitted his role in international nuclear proliferation.
The government of Pakistan recently relaxed restrictions on Khan's movements, allowing him to meet a limited number of friends. However, the restrictions were reimposed after Khan gave interviews to the media. Dr. Qadeer Khan is considered a national hero due to his role in Pakistan's nuclear bomb.

Former Pakistani President: The U.S. Is World's Greatest Satan
Former Pakistani President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar has described the United States as "the world's greatest Satan." The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Express reported that Rafiq Tarar made the statement during an address to a conference in the honor of Prophet Muhammad. According to the report, the former President said: "The United States is the world's greatest Satan and is playing its satanic game across the world. And unfortunately, its trusted advisor [meaning President Musharraf] has been thrust on Pakistan and is extending its policies." Rafiq Tarar also urged the Organization of Islamic Conference to terminate its relations with all countries where cartoons of Islam's Prophet Muhammad were published.
Militant Tribal Leader: "We Are Out To Spread Islam In The Entire World" The Chief of militant Islamic tribal group Lashkar-e-Islam Mangal Bagh has said that the group's activities are not limited to Pakistan's tribal district of Khyber Agency. The Urdu-language Roznama Khabrain quoted him as saying: "Allah revealed the Koran, which was not sent for any one particular region of the world...We are out to spread Islam throughout the world." In the ongoing fighting between Lashkar-e-Islam and rival tribal groups in the tribal district of Khyber Agency, where dozens of people have been killed in recent days. Taliban Commanders Take Control Of Several Towns In Pakistan's Swat District
The Taliban have regained control of several areas in the Swat district of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province and their armed units are patrolling the region. The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Mashriq reported that the Taliban have regained the control of the Imam Dheri Markaz, once the stronghold of their leader Maulana Fazlullah.
According to the report, the Taliban commanders appeared Wednesday at the Imam Dheri Markaz, cleaned the mosque and offered evening prayer. The Taliban leaders also announced they will offer weekly Friday prayers on April 11. According to the report, the key commanders loyal to the militia leader Maulana Fazlullah are meeting tribal elders in the region. A spokesman for Maulana Fazlullah told Roznama Mashriq: "Our demand is the implementation of shari'a and we will stand by it." The Taliban had taken control of most of the Swat district in the North West Frontier Province last year before being repulsed by the Pakistani army. The new secular government in the province has said it will start a process of dialogue with the Taliban in order to eliminate extremism in the region.
The Taliban are working the Pashtu culture on all levels, religious, sports and political.
