    Musharraf imposes emergency rule

BBC - Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has declared emergency rule, state-run TV has said, amid reports that police have surrounded the Supreme Court.

Judges are believed to be inside the building in Islamabad, reports say.

Troops have been deployed inside state-run TV and radio stations, while independent channels have gone off air.

Gen Musharraf is awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on whether he was eligible to run for re-election last month while remaining army chief.

    Fake Suspended NOTICE

    Saturday, November 03, 2007

( THIS HAS APPLICATIONS TO TERROR SITES )

Detecting and Blocking the Russian Business Network

Bleeding Edge Threats recently announced the release of some very handy RBN blocking/detecting rulesets :

"Call these hosts what you like, we see a large amount of hostile activity from these nets, and get little to no abuse response for takedown, Do what you will with this information."

Remember RBN's fake anti virus and anti spyware software? The list is getting bigger with another 20 additions again hosted on RBN IPs exposed by the RBNExploit blog.

Meanwhile you may be also be interested in how does an abuse request get handled at the RBN? Deceptively of course. Each and every domain or IP that has been somehow reported malicious to them, not once but numerous times by different organizations starts serving a fake account suspended message like the following malicious domains hosted at the RBN do :

FAKE: SERVED ACCORDING TO YOUR IP:

"This Account Has Been Suspended For Violation Of Hosting Terms And Conditions. Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible"

    - superengine.cn (81.95.149.181) - fake account suspended message, no malicious script at front page but within the domain ( NOTICE YOU WILL GET INFECTED ON THESE DOMAINS. )

    - eliteproject.cn (81.95.149.124) - fake account suspended message, no malicious script at front page but within the domain

    - space-sms.info (200.115.174.248) - fake account suspended, loads the malicious takenames.cn

    - lem0n.info - (200.115.174.248) fake account suspended message, obfuscated javascript to bl0cker.info

    - worldtraff.cn (200.115.174.248) - fake account suspended message, loads bl0cker.info and takenames.cn

    - takenames.cn (58.65.239.66) - fake of eValid web testing solution, interacting with all of these domains

Dots, dots, dots, 58.65.239.66 or takenames.cn for the time being, used to resolve to goodtraff.biz in the past, another RBN operation we know from the Bank of India hack, where the second RBN IP was used in the most recent Possibility Media's Malware Fiasco as well.

Lone Army Ranger surrounded, in Waziristan.

A lone Army Ranger got separated from his unit during a night time ambush.
He was out of ammo, grenades and spotted by the Taliban.

His Radio had caught some flack and wasn't working and he was low on water and had a flesh wound.

The Taliban decided to attack him before search and rescue could be called in.

The Taliban leader, Mullah Mansour Dadullah is looking for a hostage to Torture.
Mansour responded, "we have been walking on his footsteps, and following his methods. We are still following his strategy and working to finish him off."

Mansour decide to flank the Ranger, he sent in a squad of heavily armed Arabs from the East and from the West Pashtoons, while he held the middle ground as the Anvil, surrounding him.

Most of the fighting was in the back of a small Mountain, in
Waziristan with Dulla holding the front.

The fighting went on for 3 hours.

One of Dullas scouts returned with his field report, he was wounded, a gasping chest wound and had lost a lot of blood, His report was given in Pashtoon, it was:... "look out its a trap... the Ranger has a Knife. "

    Taliban SERVANT of al Qaeda

Taliban is al Qaeda's Servant or autistic savant?

Al-Qaida's official As-Sahab Media Foundation has released a new video interview with Mullah Mansour Dadullah, who has served as the top military commander of the Taliban since his brother's death in May 2007. When asked whether he intended to persist on with his brother's "tactics of conducting international jihad", Mansour responded, "we have been walking on his footsteps, and following his methods. We are still following his strategy and working to finish what he started."

    vIDEO HERE:

hE ADMITS Taliban is al Qaedas servant, note how his turn to the left several times to se if what he has said meets with approval of someone off camera.

Why doesn't the "anti-terrorism" crew at NEFA allow embeding of the video?

They also lock their PDF's??? ( NEFA )

    HAMMAS VS SWAT TEAMS

Before USA attacks Iran they need to plan for Hammas.
    Paradigm considerations.
SWATteams are great against a couple of bank robbers.

But we saw what happened in Calf, when two bank robbers with amour
and automatic weapons took on the police force.

How many SWAT Teams have been trained in out right military tactics?

How would the SWAT teams stand up against a Hammas squad with auto weapons?

There are many ex-Military in SWAT, but the teams have not been trained to fight
    another Squad with automatic weapons.

    Chinese military boosts hacking

    Chinese military boosts hacking

    By Bill Gertz
    November 2, 2007

HONOLULU — Senior military commanders at the U.S. Pacific Command here said China's recent test of an anti-satellite weapon and increased computer-hacking activities prompted increased defenses for U.S. forces in the region and in space.

"U.S. space capabilities are an asymmetric advantage that we have to maintain," said Air Force Lt. Gen. Daniel Leaf, deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.

"There has been significant discussion and activity to assess the impact of [the anti-satellite test] and other [Chinese] space developments, and how to protect our extraordinarily important space capability," he said in an interview at the command's headquarters at Camp H.M. Smith.

Pentagon officials have said Chinese military hackers in recent months carried out computer-based attacks on Pentagon and U.S. military and civilian government computer networks, as well as on foreign government networks.

Without naming China, Gen. Leaf said the problem of computer attacks is growing.

"We're very concerned about that — for the information that may be contained on [the networks] or for the activities we conduct that are command and control and situational awareness related."

Details of recent computer attacks, including those on Pacific Command networks, are classified, Gen. Leaf said. But the issue was raised in meetings with Chinese military officials.

"We expect actions that are consistent with the professed desire for a peaceful, responsible rise of China as a more significant player on the Pacific and world stage," he said.

    FOREIGN TALEBAN RILE HELMAND RESIDENTS

FOREIGN TALEBAN ( al Qaeda? ) RILE HELMAND RESIDENTS

Afghans in the troubled province say many of the insurgents
    are not
Pashtuns but incomers from other countries who behave in a
    high-handed and
    aggressive way towards local civilians.

    By IWPR trainees in Helmand

Abdujalil is still angry at the rough treatment the Taleban
    meted out
to him while he was on way home to the Khaneshin district
    from the
    provincial capital, Lashkar Gah.

“I went to the city on business, said Abdujalil (not his real
    name).
“I was stopped by the Taleban on the way back. They searched
    me,
accused me of spying, and then took me to their base.
    They asked me a lot
of questions and said I was a spy for the government.
    They warned me
that they’d kill me if I ever came to Lashkar Gah again.”

The young man insists his captors were foreigners rather
    than Afghans,
as were most of the insurgent fighters at the Taleban base
    where they
    took him.

“Many of them were [Pakistani] Punjabis,” he said. “The rest
    were
from somewhere else. I wouldn’t be so angry if they had
    been Afghan,
but now foreigners are playing with us.”

Once at the insurgents’ base, he said, he was lucky enough
    to run
into a local member of the Taleban who knew him and helped
    secure his
    release.

The presence of foreign fighters is an explosive issue in
    war-ravaged
Helmand, where fierce battles between the insurgents and the
international forces take place almost continuously, and
    suicide attacks occur on
a weekly, sometimes daily basis. Most residents agree that
    security is
    their biggest problem.

People in Helmand claim much of the trouble stems not from
    Afghan
Taleban, but from insurgents trained in Pakistan who flow
    in through the
porous border. Religious schools and training centres in
    Pakistani cities
such as Quetta and Peshawar turn out suicide bombers and
    jihadi
fighters who then come to Afghanistan to cause mischief.

    Son-in-law = al Qaeda, NOT:

Angry dad hands son-in-law in to FBI as 'al-Qaeda'

    From correspondents in Stockholm

    November 03, 2007 02:56am

    Article from: Agence France-Presse

A MAN in Sweden who was angry with his daughter's husband has been charged with libel for telling the FBI the son-in-law had links to al-Qaeda, Swedish media reported.

The man, who admitted sending the email, said he did not think the US authorities were stupid enough to believe him.

The 40-year-old son-in-law and his wife were in the process of divorcing when the husband had to travel to the US for business.

The wife didn't want him to travel since she was sick and wanted him to help care for their children, regional daily Sydsvenska Dagbladet said without disclosing the couple's names.

When the husband refused to stay home, his father-in-law wrote an email to the FBI saying the son-in-law had links to al-Qaeda in Sweden and was travelling to the US to meet his contacts.

He provided information on the flight number and date of arrival in the US.

The son-in-law was arrested upon landing in Florida.

He was placed in handcuffs, interrogated and placed in a cell for 11 hours before being put on a flight back to Europe, the paper said.

The FBI contacted Swedish intelligence agency Saepo, which discovered the email tipping off the FBI had been sent from the father-in-law's computer.

The father-in-law has been charged with aggravated libel.

He has admitted sending the email, but said he didn't think “the authorities were so stupid that they would believe anything. But apparently they are.”

He said he “couldn't help the US authorities' paranoid reaction”.

Saudi shooting its self in FOOT.

(CNN) — Saudi Arabia could have helped the United States prevent al Qaeda’s 2001 attacks on New York and Washington if American officials had consulted Saudi authorities in a “credible” way, the kingdom’s former ambassador said in a documentary aired Thursday.

( IF SAUDI WAS A CREDIBLE ALLY , THEY WOULD HAVE WARNED USA )

Prince Bandar said that Saudi intelligence was “actively following” most of the 9/11 plotters “with precision.”

( AND DID NOT NOTIFY USA )

The comments by Prince Bandar bin Sultan are similar to the remarks this week by Saudi King Abdullah that suggested Britain could have prevented the July 2005 train bombings in London if it had heeded warnings from Riyadh.

    ( SEE ABOVE COMMENTS )

Speaking to the Arabic satellite network Al-Arabiya on Thursday, Bandar — now Abdullah’s national security adviser — said Saudi intelligence was “actively following” most of the September 11, 2001, plotters “with precision.”

( ADVANCE KNOWLEDGE OF THE 911 ATTACK ? HMM WHAT DOES USDOJ SAY? )

“If U.S. security authorities had engaged their Saudi counterparts in a serious and credible manner, in my opinion, we would have avoided what happened,” he said.

( 15 OF THE 19 WERE SAUDI CITIZENS, SAUDI INTEL WAS ON THEM WITH PRECISION, AND DID NOT NOTIFY USA, THATS KINDA LIKE A COP WATCH A MURDER AND TAKING NO ACTION )

THERE ARE SOME SERIOUS DISCONNECTS WITH IN THE ROYAL FAMILY.

Saudi Arabia is exporting Wabisim, extream form of Islam to Great Britain and complaining G.B. is to easy on the Wabisi?

Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing???
    or:
Western Intelligence isn't listening to Saudi Intelligence?
Question is WHO is "MOE" working for, Saudi's or USA.

Middle East situation report, Paradigm review.

I want to be careful with this, everything I am reporting here is developed from OSINT and application of Paradigm Intel and process.

Our view of the ME is very favorable: ( Excluding Iran )
al Qaeda in Iraq is moving into a mop up Phase.
They are operating as a Criminal gang now.

About two months ago Intel services were able to pick up the IP's of many of the terrorists involved in the operation of their Internet Activities ( even though they diligently use good proxys ). This includes webmasters and the Islamofacists Hackers.

Locating and interrogating these cadre and collection of their data bases on their PC's and thumb sticks lead to many Military operations against al Qaeda and the Taliban, and a virtual shut down of their Internet operations.
Then Civilians closed most of their terror web sites.
Morale on most jahid forums is the lowest we have ever seen it. ( Life expectancy of Internet Jahidist is 3 years. )

There are many classified operations on going. A major one covered in the press is the operation in Afghanistan, Which has led to a decapitation of all mid-level Taliban cadre.
Even the Taliban see the writting on the wall, and they are looking for a way out.

Biny has admitted al Qaeda has failed in Iraq and he goes begging for any support, which Islam continues to deny him.
KIA are way down, Civilian deaths are way down, unEmployment and inflation in Iraq are way down, key indicators.

Spain seems to be into some heavy secret operations and we don't have a good handle on that yet.

al Qaeda has been wringing suicide bombers out of the Ummah for six years now and abusing them and their souls.

al Qaeda is low on money and man power, and USA is getting closer to Biny and his top level
    commanders.

We expect some last hurrahs, and al Qaeda to go out in a fit of violence.
    The Taliban maybe converted.

A major worry is the "LAW of unintended Consequences."

    Example:
GAP Inc. just discovered some of their goods were made by starving children. ( I know, I don't know if they are really starving, and neither does GAP )
They re-doubled thier efforts to make sure no children are involved in sweat shops making their products.
And there will be a crack down on children working.
While I support these efforts, I want to make sure "starving children" have not been kicked out into the street to starve from the sweat shops.

Starving, dying children is more offensive that having them work in a sweat shop, where they earn money for food.
We have to look at consequences.

Drugs in Afghan and Patki fall into the same category.

While I support the anti-drug efforts in both countries, it would be a mistake to destroy drug crops and force starving farmers into the arms of the Taliban for insurgent wages.

The Taliban had outlawed growing poppies, made it a crime and enforced it.
The Ummah had no one to turn to. So Poppy eradication can be done.

But YOU have to be in CONTROL to enforce it, like the Taliban were.

The timing should be considered, on drug eradication programs.

Everyone is holding their breath to see if its all going to stack up like this.
It won't, there will be surprises and set backs.

But we must try and not trip over the
    "LAW of unintended Consequences."

    Summary:
al Qaeda in Iraq is winding down.
Taliban: very heavy losses and under heavy pressure. And a new paradigm developing al Qaeda V.S. Taliban.***
Terrorist activities on the web have been dealt a very heavy blow.

    Propagana arm crippled.
Both al Qaeda and Taliban operating with 3rd and 4th tier cadre.
    and under funded.
al Qaeda is being rejected by the Ummah and ratings for the Taliban are dropping among the Ummah also.
Most recent videos have been desperate attempts to try and breathe some life into the terrorists organizations.

They have gone from "issuing orders" to "suggestions" to "begging" and even APOLOGIES.

THEIR MOST RECENT EFFORT is their Internet Jahid against civilian targets, which is also doomed to failure.

The press need to recognize this story will also sell papers.
When did it become "Politically Correct" for American news to be Anti-American?

The turn around has been very quick, sudden and still not fully recognized, past two months.
aQ and the Taliban are experiencing it, going thru it and see it much clearer then other countries.
As time goes on it will become evident.
    All the marks are there.

Participant observation, the "process" all point to this paradigm, news seems to confirm it.
Bots continue to collect evidence as it unfolds.

    What is Kimberly's point?

Hundreds of U.S. Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans commit suicide ( BS )

By Kimberly Hefling, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

"WASHINGTON - Hundreds of troops have come home from war, left the military and committed suicide.

That is the finding of preliminary Veterans Affairs Department research obtained by The Associated Press that provides the first quantitative look at the suicide toll on today's combat veterans. The research reveals at least 283 combat veterans who left the military between the start of the war in Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, and the end of 2005 took their own lives.

The numbers, while not dramatically different from society as a whole, are reminiscent of the increased suicide risk among returning soldiers in the Vietnam era.....SOURCE: MORE:"

The numbers, while not dramatically different from society as a whole,

The numbers, while not dramatically different from society as a whole,

The numbers, while not dramatically different from society as a whole,

So if they had not gone to war the suicide rate would be the same for this group....

Which means there is NO Evidence that the WAR contributed to the Suicide RATE.

    IT STAYED THE SAME...

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS STORY?
It does give support to enemy propaganda on this subject.

"The numbers, while not dramatically different from society as a whole, are reminiscent of the increased suicide risk among returning soldiers in the Vietnam era"
Well what was it, were Vietnam's suicide RATE the same as for the public population?
There is no INCREASE in the RATE???
    Sounds like al Qaeda spin...G

And it misleads the public that only sees the headline.

What happened to critical thinking among the news reporters?
Do they read their own work? Where is the responsible reporting?
When did it become "politically correct" for USA news to be anti-American?

    Gerald

USA Civilians Killed al Qaeda on the Internet

USA Government missed some things during the 6 yrs GWOT.

And to be fair the Army the Military branches of the Government have done an outsanding JOB of WAR. They adapted faster than any Corporation could have, the technology they have developed and deployed is awesome.

The KIA stats as compared to WWII and Vietnam show a clear focused effective Paradigm.

The USA Military are the most successful effective corporation in the world.

In gearing up for this war ( USA is always gearing up for the next WAR, its their job )
the Government missed the Internet effect and its capabilities as a force multiplier.

The civilian population were the first to experience, observe al Qaeda on the Internet,
al Qaeda were the first to adapt the WWW paradigm. We found their Internet Risks and exploited them. The Internet is a force Multiplier, but also opens a back door to al Qaeda.

Just as the Americans on the jet liner took over the plane from the hijackers.
( On 911 it was Civilians that first stepped in and confronted al Qaeda face to face. )
American civilians saw the WWW void and stepped in, stepped up to serve.
    Keyboard to keyboard.

Western Blogs stepped in to counter the Propaganda war, or the Infowar, and countered the lies and propaganda.

The thing that really amazed me and was unexpected is the quality of WAR analysis from the Civilian sector.

And I want to call this the "Brilliant civilian sector".
It included the likes of Bill Roggio,Dancho Danchev, Douglas Farah, Ray Robison, team at Counter terrorism Blog, Jamestown, Laura Mansfield, Memri, Site, and many many others.

And there have been Civilians leading the effort to shut down terror sites, when it was eaiser for Armed forces to gat an approval to bomb a house and kill everyone than an OK to take down a server. The Civilian sector stepped in and took care of it.

Thinking 'leaving up' or 'taking down' terror sites.

Everytime al Qaeda screwed up the civilians were there to point it out, catch them and expose it.

And there is another secret civilian sector with hacking abilities that regularly report to Government agencys. Even Civilians to be-friend the terrorist on line and report their actions

WE all fight al Qaeda to the extent of our abilities and I salute you ALL.

DEBKAfile Exclusive: Al Qaeda declares Cyber Jihad on the West

    October 30, 2007, 9:31 PM (GMT+02:00)

Symbol of al Qaeda's Cyber Warriors

Symbol of al Qaeda's Cyber Warriors

In a special Internet announcement in Arabic, picked up DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources, Osama bin Laden’s followers announced Monday, Oct. 29, the launching of Electronic Jihad. On Sunday, Nov. 11, al Qaeda’s electronic experts will start attacking Western, Jewish, Israeli, Muslim apostate and Shiite Web sites. On Day One, they will test their skills against 15 targeted sites expand the operation from day to day thereafter until hundreds of thousands of Islamist hackers are in action against untold numbers of anti-Muslim sites.

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that, shortly after the first announcement, some of al Qaeda’s own Web sites went blank, apparently crashed by the American intelligence computer experts tracking them.

The next day, Oct. 30, they were up again, claiming their Islamic fire walls were proof against infidel assault.

They also boasted an impenetrable e-mail network for volunteers wishing to join up with the cyber jihad to contact and receive instructions undetected by the security agencies in their respective countries.

Our sources say the instructions come in simple language and are organized in sections according to target. They offer would-be martyrs, who for one reason or another are unable to fight in the field, to fulfill their jihad obligations on the Net. These virtual martyrs are assured of the same thrill and sense of elation as a jihadi on the “battlefield.”

In effect, say DEBKAfile’s counter-terror experts, al Qaeda is retaliating against Western intelligence agencies’ tactics, which detect new terrorist sites and zap them as soon as they appear. Until now, the jihadists kept dodging the assault by throwing up dozens of new sites simultaneously. This kept the trackers busy and ensured that some of the sites survived, while empty pages were promptly replaced. But as al Qaeda’s cyber wizards got better at keeping its presence on the Net for longer periods, so too did Western counter-attackers at knocking them down. Now Bin Laden’s cyber legions are fighting back. The electronic war they have declared could cause considerable trouble on the world’s Internet.

Not a problem, this is the remanants of the old al-jinan.org .
They are using off the shelf kiddy scripts.
The group is using a secret web site and email adr to recruit.

At the very MOST they will disrupt access to a few web sites for min.s.

The group doesn't have more than 100 members.
Their IT advisors in India are being monitored.

We burned the leader of this group and they ran scared underground,
but even snakes leave holes, we followed.

They have new names, and have started some limited Smacking, defacing web sites.
We have watched/tracked them in action and got the websites restored before they could even make copies of the defacement.

Most recently, four members of al Qaeda's al Furqan media cell in Mosul were captured, "including the media emir of Mosul, the former head of Mosul’s media cell who had established the al Qaeda communications hub in Baghdad, a foreign terrorist from Saudi Arabia who is proficient in video editing and special effects, and a computer graphics specialist," the Armed Forces Press Service reported. Cells have also been broken up in Baghdad, Diyala, Tarmiyah, Samarra, and Karma.

Will Turkey and Iraq allow al Qaeda to draw them into a fight?

Iraq warns Turkey against 'disastrous' incursion

ANKARA (AFP) — Turkey paraded its military muscle Monday, amid stern warnings from Baghdad that any large-scale Turkish incursion against Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq would have "disastrous" results.

In the capital Ankara, tanks and rocket launchers were on display in the annual national day parade as Turks celebrated the 84th anniversary of the secular republic's creation by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

In stark contrast to the festive mood across most of the country, Turkish troops faced off with some 100 rebels in the Ikiyaka mountains in the southeast.

The military had surrounded the fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in a bid to prevent them escaping across the Iraqi border, the Anatolia news agency reported

Firefight in Iraq Exposes Presence of Turkish Al-Qaeda Operatives

    By Frank Hyland

The northward moves by Kurdish rebels into Turkey in recent weeks and their bombings of Turkish military and civilian targets have been reported extensively, as have the consequent threats by the Turkish military to move into Iraq to bring about a halt to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacks. A firefight with U.S. forces in Iraq on June 23, however, has shed light on the hitherto lesser known southward flow of foreign fighters out of Turkey into Iraq and the role of Turkish al-Qaeda in overseeing that movement.

On June 23, as members of the Multinational Force-Iraq (MNF-I) approached a targeted building near Hawija, 150 miles north of Baghdad and south of Kirkuk, an area populated primarily by Kurds, four individuals entered a vehicle and attempted to leave the scene (MNF-I Statement, June 28). MNF-I forces followed the vehicle until it stopped and the occupants got out wielding weapons. A firefight ensued, in which all four were killed (Today's Zaman, June 29). Rocket-propelled grenades were also found in the vehicle. Two of the men have been identified: Mehmet Yilmaz, characterized as a senior leader in al-Qaeda, whose nom de guerre was Khalid al-Turki, and Mehmet Resit Isik, a courier and a close associate of senior al-Qaeda leaders, also known as Khalil al-Turki (the appellation "al-Turki" carries with it the connotation of nationality or heritage, in this case, Turkey). The MNF-I statement said that the bodies of both men had been positively identified. Yilmaz—also identified through a photo comparison and a forged Iraqi personal identification card—had operated a cell that brought foreign fighters into Iraq (Reuters, June 28).

The history of Yilmaz's involvement in al-Qaeda supports the description of him as a "senior" leader in the group. In 2001, an MNF-I statement said that Yilmaz led a group of Turks to fight in Afghanistan in the wake of the U.S. and coalition invasion to oust the Taliban from power. He was wounded there and, while in Pakistan for treatment, was captured by Pakistani authorities and deported to Turkey. Without elaboration, the MNF-I statement acknowledged that Yilmaz was released by Turkish authorities in late 2005 and resumed his operations in support of al-Qaeda in 2006, this time in Iraq. Turkish authorities are said to be investigating several attacks in which Yilmaz may have been involved (Trendaz, June 28).

There are a number of implications for Turkey and others, including the United States, regarding the involvement in Turkish al-Qaeda of an individual with the depth and breadth of experience of Yilmaz. First and foremost, it reinforces the existing evidence seen in numerous instances across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East that returning jihadis do, in fact, remain involved in the jihad and assume roles of increasing responsibility within al-Qaeda and its affiliated groups. Yilmaz's combat experiences, including that of being wounded, formed the foundation of and were the preparation for his latest role in Iraq. Those experiences parallel that of any number of other senior al-Qaeda operatives, including Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Mohammed Atef and Abu Zubaydah.

Saudi King Abdullah says UK failing to tackle terror

Visiting Saudi King Abdullah says UK failing to tackle terror; Riyadh, London disagree on 2005 suicide bombings

LONDON (RTRS): Britain failed to act on information passed to it by Saudi Arabia which might have helped prevent suicide bombings in London in 2005 that killed 52 people, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah said on Monday. In an interview with the BBC on the eve of a state visit to Britain, King Abdullah accused London of failing to do enough to combat international terrorism and said al-Qaeda remained a major threat. “We have sent information to Great Britain before the terrorist attacks in Britain but unfortunately no action was taken,” he said, speaking through an interpreter. “And it may have been able to maybe avert the tragedy.” The July 7, 2005 suicide bombings on London’s transport system were Britain’s most devastating peacetime attack.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Gordon Brown said no warnings were received before the attacks: “We made it very clear at the time that no specific warnings were received from any source.” “We do have a very close intelligence relationship with the Saudis,” he added. “We just happen to disagree on this point.” King Abdullah arrived in Britain later on Monday for a state visit. His visit has prompted protests from critics of the Saudi government’s human rights record and demonstrations are planned outside the Saudi embassy in London later this week.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband pulled out of a conference on Monday where he had been scheduled to speak alongside Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal. Officials said he cancelled because he was taking leave after adopting a second child, and denied any suggestion that the move was a snub to the Saudi government. Junior foreign office minister Kim Howells, who spoke instead of Miliband, said the two nations were working together to tackle terrorism. “This is a home-grown problem for both of us,” he said. “Practical co-operation is very important.” The Saudi monarch said in his interview that most countries — including Britain — did not view terrorism seriously enough. “It will take 20 to 30 years to defeat the scourge of terrorism with vigilant effort,” he said. “And I strongly urge all countries in the world, including Great Britain, to take the matter of fighting terrorism very, very seriously.”

Vince Cable, acting leader of Britain’s third largest party the Liberal Democrats, said he will boycott a banquet for the Saudi king to be held by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. “The human rights record of this government is absolutely appalling,” he told BBC radio, citing “systematic discrimination against women, people of other religions, the exercise of systematic corporal punishment, through amputation, the public beheadings” by the Saudi government. John McDonnell, a left-wing member of parliament in Brown’s Labour Party, said Britons would be “aghast” at the visit by “one of the most prominent anti-democratic and human rights abusing leaders in the world.” Later, a spokeswoman for Brown’s office said Britain had previously voiced concern about human rights in Saudi Arabia.

Was Bin Laden's last video faked?

2004 Bin Laden video .............2007 Bin Laden video
    from October 29, 2004............ from September 7, 2007

By Robert Windrem and Victor Limjoco

When al-Qaida’s media arm released its first Osama Bin Laden video in nearly three years, most of the media attention was focused on Bin Laden's beard. It appeared either dyed — or perhaps even pasted on. He was ridiculed and a variety of theories were offered to explain it.
But now, there is a running debate among video analysts about whether al-Qaida faked the video altogether —that rather than being new, the September 7 message may have been something recorded at the same time as his last video in October 2004 (and then released with new audio).

The point of departure for the debate is something not noted at the time: ( WE NOTED IT ) that of the 25 minutes of video tape, only three and a half minutes, were moving video. The rest was covered by a still image or a frozen still. Moreover, the still covered the only time references on the 25 minute of tape— references to political developments in Iraq, Britain and France. This lead to the suspicion that the video is not new, but disguised to appear as new.
A senior U.S. intelligence official says they believe the message is authentic, adding “it remains our view that the September 7 Bin Laden video is, in fact, new… interesting but not compelling.”
The leading proponent of the theory is a computer scientist and self-described hacker Dr. Neal Krawetz of Colorado. Krawetz, who makes his living a computer security consultant, tells NBC News in interviews and e-mails that the similarities between the October 29, 2004 tape and the September 7, 2007 tape are too great to be coincidental.

“Here is Bin Laden in the same clothing, same studio, same studio setup, and same desk THREE YEARS LATER,” wrote Krawetz in his blog, hackerfactor.org, and in an interview with NBC News. “In fact, his stack of papers that he reads are moved between the exact same stacks. If you overlay the 2007 video with the 2004 video, his face has not changed in three years -- only his beard is darker.”
What’s his theory on the beard color? “The contrast on the picture has been adjusted.” He notes it’s not the just the beard that is darker. Bin Laden’s eye sockets are darker as well. Krawetz does not think that the beard color has been digitally manipulated however. According to his e-mail: “As far as my tools can detect, there has been no image manipulation of the Bin Laden portion of the image beyond contrast adjustment. His beard really does appear to be that color.”
”What are the chances of nothing changing (except his beard) in three years? Virtually zero. The clips appear to have been recorded three years ago,” adds Krawetz.
Krawetz does not believe that al-Qaida used the exact same video it did in 2004. Instead, he suspects that al-Qaida had recorded much more video than it released in 2004. There may have even been two sittings. “The main thing I am getting at: I am not saying that they are the same recording,” he said. “I believe they recorded a speech, changed a little, and then recorded some more. (Under this same theory, they may have done it many times and AQ just has not released other videos yet).”
“I am saying the two videos were likely made either on the same day or within days of each other.”
There are indeed slight differences but Krawetz says they are easily explained.
“The ‘graybeard’ (video) had the yellow tunic unzipped (unbuttoned?) while ‘blackbeard’ is zipped up at the bottom. This actually makes sense under the theory that these are two different recordings taking on the same day (or within the same few days),” Krawetz wrote in an e-mail.
For Krawetz, Bin Laden's clothing says a lot. “If you were on the run through mountains on foot, would you be carrying around unnecessary clothing? No. You would only take the essentials. A fancy shirt and yellow (tunic) are not essential for mountain life on the run. If, in the future, you find that you need a nice shirt and sweater, you would get new ones!”

”What are the chances of nothing changing (except his beard) in three years? Virtually zero. The clips appear to have been recorded three years ago,” adds Krawetz.

$100 million USD to the Qods Force

U.S. Announces New Sanctions Against Iranian Military, Banks, Leaders (updated)

    By Andrew Cochran

Today, the State Department designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) for their proliferation activities. The Treasury Department also designated numerous Iranian parties for proliferation concerns: nine IRGC-affiliated entities and five IRGC-affiliated individuals; two state-owned banks, Bank Melli (its biggest) and Bank Mellat; and three individuals affiliated with Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO). The Treasury Department also designated the IRGC-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) under for providing material support to the Taliban in Afghanistan and other terrorist organizations, and also designated Iran's state-owned Bank Saderat as a terrorist financier. Moreover, elements of the IRGC and MODAFL were listed in the Annexes to U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1737 and 1747, which leads to a freeze on their assets by all member nations.

I recommend reading the detailed fact sheet on all of the designations on the Treasury website.

In my opinion, the broad scope of this sweeping announcement signals a decisive foreign policy decision, in concert with other countries, to significantly ratchet up sanctions against Iran to avoid a more dangerous confrontation (the Associated Press characterizes them as "the harshest since the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in 1979"). CTB Contributing Experts have posted so often on the potential for these sanctions and their impact - more often than any other website - that I can only point readers towards their individual archives:

    Matthew Levitt
    Victor Comras
    Douglas Farah
    Jonathan Winer
    Michael Jacobson
    Michael Kraft

UPDATE: Senior State and Treasury Department officials gave an on-the-record briefing after the announcement of the new sanctions. State Under Secretary Nicholas Burns noted that just since late March, "Iran has transferred arms to Hamas and to Hezbollah in Lebanon and to the Shia militant groups in Iraq and to the Taliban in Afghanistan." So that doubt is resolved in the opinion of the U.S. government, as is the question of Shia cooperation with Sunni terrorist groups against the U.S., which we have addressed here often.

Treasury Under Secretary Stuart Levey noted, "...we have Bank Melli handling transactions for Bank Sepah after its designation. We have Bank Melli handling transactions for the DIO, already designated, for SHIG, already designated both the United States and by the United Nations, and even taking deceptive actions to prevent others from knowing what they're doing, like asking -- taking precautions to take Bank Sepah's name off of transactions when they're handling transactions for it. Bank Melli also, even though it has designated for proliferation, was also handling business for the Qods Force. And from 2002 to 2006, was used to send over $100 million to the Qods Force." See these CT Blog posts on the Bank Sepah designation.

    Iran's Invulnerable Bunkers?

    Iran's Invulnerable Bunkers?

    By David Hambling EmailApril 13, 2007 | 11:25:00 AM

A few weeks back, the Air Force detonated out its most powerful bunker-buster yet. But a new Iranian super-strong concrete might make it almost useless before it reaches service.

Ord_massive_ordnance_penetrator_boe I owe this story to DANGER ROOM reader Jay Sappington, a civil engineer in Fort Worth. He graduated with his masters from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), where he had participated in a student competition organized by the American Concrete Institute. The challenge was to make a 2”x2” concrete cube with the highest possible compressive strength. Among the competitors at this internationally diverse school was a team from the University of Tehran. Jay takes up the story.

"I designed a 2”x2” concrete cube with a compressive strength of 16,000 psi [pounds per square inch] at 28-days, a relatively high strength as standard concrete is on the order of 3,000 psi, typically. Now, The University of Tehran made several cubes between 50,000 to 60,000 psi, and possible stronger! I thought the aggregate to be made from quartz, and I also remember some steel fibers in the mix. These cubes exploded at failure, finally damaging the compression machine on the third or fourth cube (that machine was substantial, made for much larger samples). So, keep in mind this is unreinforced concrete (save the steel fibers) at an early age. Concrete becomes stronger, sometimes by orders of magnitude, over time.

Jay Googled the sponsoring professor of the Iranian students, and found that he has an extensive resume in the fields of ultra high strength concrete and nuclear reactors. So it’s far from impossible that the Iranian nuclear industry has access to some pretty advanced technology in this area – and given the repeated threats to bomb nuclear installations, we can expect them to be well protected.

To give you some idea of just how tough we are talking, rock of over 10,000 psi is considered hard. The strongest granite is about 30,000 psi. How well would the MOP deal with ultra-tough concrete?

According to Globalsecurity.org, the Air Force's new, 30,000-pound, bunker-busting Massive Ordnance Penetrator "is expected to penetrate as much as 60 meters [200 feet] through 5,000 psi reinforced concrete. It will burrow 8 meters into the ground through 10,000 psi reinforced concrete."

That’s quite a reduction between 5,000 and 10,000 psi. Something several times stronger could degrade performance a lot more. I asked Rex Swenson, Public Affairs Liaison of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Munition Directorate, about this. He answered:

Unfortunately, we can not discuss the actual capabilities of the MOP due to security concerns. Suffice to say that the numbers on the Global Security website were not provided by DTRA [Defense Threat Reduction Agency] or the AFRL/MN.

The bottom line is that any highly reinforced target might withstand one strike from a MOP, but even a bunker roof made of 60,000 psi concrete can be chipped away at until it finally fails to protect what's underneath.

Personally, I’d guess that advanced concrete could severely limit the effectiveness of the blunt instrument/brute force approach embodied by MOP. You really don’t want to be dropping bombs at intervals against the same spot, especially when an aircraft can only carry one.

The answer has to lie in smarter weapons with more advanced payloads. The Air Force is looking at more sophisticated ways to defeat a bunker complex – earthquake bombs and robot cockroaches being among the more extreme. Beating your head against an ultra-hard concrete wall may not be the answer.

equip B-2 “stealth” bombers with a new 30,000-pound bunker buster.
