Taliban factions are using Western forces to eliminate rival commanders in a new version of the "Great Game" being played out in Afghanistan and Pakistan, top security sources have suggested.
The tempo of targeted attacks on the Taliban leadership has dramatically increased in the past months. Though the British and Americans have presented the recent assassinations of top leaders of the Taliban to show that their policy of "decapitating" the enemy leadership is working, security sources said that factions with the Taliban are using Western forces to eliminate rival chieftains in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"Not all of the intelligence we are getting is being given for altruistic reasons. The Taliban movement is pretty amorphous and we are aware that different groupings appear to be passing on information," said a senior Western official, who deals with both Nato and Afghan forces on security matters.
"There appears to be a power struggle going on in the insurgent leadership across the [Pakistan] border and we are also aware that certain official bodies have their own agendas and that is reflected in what they tell us," he was quoted as saying by The Independent newspaper today.
Security sources said "hits" on the Taliban leadership have almost all been based on initial intelligence provided from within the insurgency,
ISLAMABAD, Jul 25 (APP): Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman A Malik said on Friday said upto 40 commanders of Al-Qaeda including Amjad and Rafi had been arrested during operations in Hangu and Bara, while 17 security personnel embraced martyrdom. Al-Qaeda Commander: Islam Doesn't Distinguish Between American People, American Gov't - Both Are Infidels and At War with Islam
On July 21, 2008, Pakistan's independent television network Geo News aired an exclusive interview with Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid, Al-Qaeda's No. 3 man and top commander in Afghanistan. The interview, conducted in Arabic, was broadcast on Geo News with a voiceover in Urdu. It was later posted on Islamist websites, and its content was published in Pakistani newspapers.
Abu Al-Yazid, also known as Sheikh Sa'id, is a 52-year-old Egyptian with two wives and 14 children. In 1981 he was arrested in Egypt for involvement in the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Al-Sadat, but was released a year later. In 1988, after heading various militant groups, he joined Al-Qaeda and shifted his base of operations to Afghanistan. In 1991 he worked for Osama bin Laden in Sudan as an accountant, and later became director of Al-Qaeda's financial affairs. He has also been a member of Al-Qaeda's Shura Council, in charge of financial planning, organizational affairs, and public relations.(1)
The following are excerpts from the Geo News interview:
Pakistan Caused Great Damage to Al-Qaeda by Supporting U.S.
In the interview, Abu Al-Yazid stated that Al-Qaeda was responsible for the attack on the Danish Embassy in Islamabad last June. He said that the bomber was a Saudi, and added: "We are proud to have carried out [this operation], and we congratulated our brothers for completing this task. We timed the attack in such a way that no Muslims were in the vicinity." Abu Al-Yazid also stated that Al-Qaeda had been responsible for the 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. On a previous occasion, he claimed that the organization had carried out the December 27, 2007 assassination of former Pakistani prime-minister Benazir Bhutto.
Referring to the permissibility of suicide bombings, Abu Al-Yazid said that eminent Islamic scholars around the world had issued fatwas sanctioning them. He added: "Suicide attacks are justified by Islamic shari'a. [However, Islamic] scholars [who are affiliated with] governments issue whatever fatwas they are told to issue... However, suicide attacks inside mosques are forbidden." BUT BOMBING THE GOLDEN MOSQUE WAS OK? G
aQ killing Moslems, women, children bombing Mosques and market places is OK? G
About the role of the Pakistani government in the U.S.-led war on terror, the Al-Qaeda commander remarked: "The Pakistani government is the government that has caused the greatest damage to the mujahideen. It was [Pakistani President] Pervez Musharraf...who caused the most damage to his neighbors, the mujahideen [of the Taliban], though it was [only] thanks to their sacrifice that the USSR did not invade Pakistan [in the 1980s]."
Abu Al-Yazid praised Khaled Sheikh Muhammad, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, who is currently on trial in the U.S., saying: "Khaled is a fearless man of whom the entire Muslim nation can be proud."(2) KILLING CIVILIANS, WOMEN AND CHILDREN, VERY PROUD INDEED.G
"The Allegation that Al-Qaeda Is Promoting U.S. Interests Is a Lie"
Asked about a conspiracy theory that has gained currency in Pakistan, namely that Al-Qaeda was created by the U.S. in the 1980s with the purpose of fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, Abu Al-Yazid said: "This is a lie and falsehood, and was exposed as such years ago... when Sheikh Osama bin Laden declared jihad against the U.S. Since then, [Al-Qaeda has carried out] a series of operations against the U.S... first the attacks on the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, then the attacks on U.S. targets in Yemen and Somalia, and culminating in the pious action of 9/11. This series of attacks on the U.S. is clear proof that this allegation - [namely] that Al-Qaeda is promoting U.S. interests - is [nothing but] a lie and falsehood."(3)
I AGREE PAKI PARANOIA AND LACK OF CRITICAL THINKING. G
Abu Al-Yazid added: "Al-Qaeda is waging jihad against the U.S. because it is the head of the infidels and the pharaoh of our times. The U.S. is the flag-bearer of the new modern crusade... against the Muslim nation. We are [also] fighting the U.S. because it is standing by Israel and providing it with all sorts of assistance and power..."(4)
"Islam Does Not Distinguish Between the American People and the American Government"
LIES, aQ DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ISLAM. G
Abu Al-Yazid stressed: "Islam does not distinguish between the American people and the American government, since both are in a state of war with Islam. After all, these are the people who elect the [American] governments, and who even elected [President George] Bush for a second term in office, despite their awareness of his agenda against Islam. Despite witnessing Bush's many brutal [actions] against the Muslims, these people re-elected him. They are the ones who pay the taxes that enable the American government and army to wage war and spill the blood of Muslims..."(5)
Abu Al-Yazid added that Al-Qaeda's attacks on the U.S. forces in Afghanistan were becoming more frequent, and that the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai would not last. He also emphasized that Al-Qaeda receives no support from any Muslim government.(6)
Image via WikipediaSenior Saudi Cleric: Bin Laden "Is a Promoter of Evil and Deviant"; Al-Zawahiri Is a "Deviant"
Following the recent arrest in Saudi Arabia of 520 terrorists who had planned attacks on the country's oil facilities, the Saudi daily 'Okaz published an interview with Saudi Supreme Judicial Council head Sheikh Saleh bin Muhammad Al-Luhaidan. In his discussion of terrorism in Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Al-Luhaidan called Al-Qaeda a criminal organization that threatens to destroy the world's purest country. He also called bin Laden a promoter of evil, and the members of his organization criminals. In addition, he said that in order to protect the youth from extremist ideas, there was a need for real da'wa at home, in schools and in the media.
'Okaz: "The [Saudi] security forces recently [intercepted] two messages by the No. 2 man in Al-Qaeda, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, calling to raise funds [for the organization]. What is the ruling on someone who responds to this appeal, whether by making a donation or by giving the messages wide distribution?"
Sheikh Al-Luhaidan: "These deviants, who were not tolerated in their [own] countries, went to Iraq and to other countries with the purpose of destroying the [Saudi] kingdom. I do not know of a single country in the Muslim world that has defended the Muslims' interests and invested efforts to assist the Muslims as much as the [Saudi] kingdom… Whoever cooperates with these [terrorists] or responds to their appeals is regarded as a criminal. We beseech Allah to expose anyone who seeks to harm our country or who collaborates with criminals."
'Okaz: "What, in your opinion, brings a young Saudi to travel to Iraq or to any other unstable region [in order to] blow himself up, or [in order to] train and then return to Saudi Arabia to carry out terrorist operations?"
Sheikh Al-Luhaidan: "Young people like these were also deceived by the first Khawarij rebellion. They were impetuous young men who killed believers but showed leniency towards polytheists. Those who travel abroad with the intention of harming the Kingdom and its people and attacking its economy are no less evil than the Khawarij, who [threatened] the Islamic nation in the beginning of its history."
"What about anyone belonging to Al-Qaeda, headed by Osama bin Laden?"
Sheikh Al-Luhaidan: "That man [i.e. bin Laden] - his actions speak for him. He is not the one to direct a person onto the right path. Indeed, he is a promoter of evil and depravity, and whoever follows him, pursues depravity. If we saw a man call for a rebellion while getting ready for his evening prayer, we would denounce him as a useless criminal who defies Allah's laws. How much more so, if he were inciting others to destroy the purest country in the world - a country which is undoubtedly the best on earth - i.e. the Saudi Kingdom. Without doubt, anyone who calls to destroy it, to undermine its security, to harm its installations and economic centers, and who incites the public against it - such a person is a criminal, as are [all] members of Al-Qaeda. Anyone who is associated with [this organization] must be punished."

Representatives from IDF Intelligence, Shin Bet, Mossad warn government global terror groups like al-Qaeda, which use civilian information technology to enlist, mobilizing operatives
Roni Sofer Published: 07.23.08, 19:23 / Israel News
Substantial threats to Israel, its citizens, and Jewish people all over the world exist from worldwide Jihad organizations, specifically al-Qaeda, intelligence reports discussed by the government's Security Cabinet on Wednesday stated.
Representatives from IDF Intelligence, the Shin Bet, and the Mossad said during the discussion that global Jihad constitutes a threat to all Western countries, democratic regimes, and moderate Arab nations. They also expressed fear that the worldwide organizations would develop cooperation with local extremist groups such as Hamas and Hizbullah.
The representatives also mentioned that the Jihad organizations' operatives make use of civilian infrastructures such as the internet and information technology in order to enlist and mobilize terror cells. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert directed the intelligence officials to continue their efforts in gathering information and thwarting the threats, through cooperation with other countries seeking to battle terrorism.
On Sunday Director of Military Intelligence Major-General Amos Yadlin told the cabinet that Israel's enemies have no interest in provoking any military conflict while US President George W. Bush is still in office.
The military, he warned, does believe a limited military campaign, which will probably not escalate into a full-fledged war, is possible.
Yadelin also surveyed the circumstances that could instigate terror attacks on Israel. "We have intelligence indicating terror activities are possible both on the northern and southern fronts. Hizbullah may choose to use one of their still disputed subjects, such as the Shaaba Farms or Imad Mugniyah's assassination," he told the cabinet.
As for the Iranian threat, Yadlin briefed the cabinet on the latest intelligence assessments, saying that Iran is forging ahead with its nuclear developments, despite the international community implementing some diplomatic and financial duress.
Syria, he said, is slowly by surely "escaping its international isolation, despite assisting Hizbullah. Damascus is taking several steps in order to get closer to the West, but is still very much a part of the axis of terror."
KABUL: British forces killed a Taliban leader, while another Taliban commander in the southern Afghanistan surrendered to the Pakistani authorities, the British Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.
Abdul Rasaq, also known as Mullah Sheikh, a Taliban leader in southern Helmand province, was killed along with three others in a missile strike north of Musa Qala on Sunday, the ministry said. Hours earlier, Mullah Rahim, said to be a senior Taliban leader in Helmand, had given himself up to the authorities in Pakistan, it said.
In an other incident, the United States-led coalition and Afghan forces killed or wounded more than 30 Taliban during fighting in the west of Afghanistan, a senior police official said on Tuesday. Fighting broke out in the Bala Boluk district of Farah province on Tuesday, Regional Police Chief Ikramuddin Yawar said. "So far more than 30 Taliban insurgents have been killed or wounded in the operation," Yawar said, adding, "The toll might be more than 30 because the operation is ongoing."
Malta and international press digest Times of Malta - Valletta,Malta The Times of Central Asia reports British forces in Afghanistan have killed their third senior Taliban leader in little more than three weeks. ...
Image by inju via Flickr screwed up big time on this one. G
I expected the show to start out with the ugly American and develop into a balanced truthful accurate representation of the Invasion/war on Iraq.
The show hates American troops, it never balanced out the first segment, it just got worse and worse. I makes out American troops out to be baby killing, civilian killing, no respect for human life LIKE al Qaeda.
Americans are not like that, American troops are not like that, the series is an embarrassment to HBO. It is just UGLY. I've called my cable server and canceled HBO.
The series could have been directed by al Qaeda, its is a terrorist propaganda view of American Troops.
Sorry guys I was way off on this piece of illegitimate CRAP.
It has the flavor and 'ordur', of the Military intellect and logic yet displays the extreme competence of the Military. No corporation in the world could match the US Military in combination of efficiency, restraint and success of their respective primary missions.

Al-Qaida senior leader grants rare TV interview Posted on Monday, July 21, 2008 4:10 PM ET
Abu Mustafa al-Yazid, an Egyptian whom U.S. intelligence officials have identified as the al-Qaeda's third highest-ranking official, sat for an interview with Najeeb Ahmad, a reporter for Geo TV. Geo TV is a private Pakistani television channel.
In the interview, Yazid, also known as Sheikh Saeed, called for the destruction of Pakistan's government which he said had "betrayed" the jihadis. Yazid swore that al-Qaida would recapture Afghanistan. And he reiterated al-Qaida's position that "all Americans, not just the American government" are the enemies of Islam.
The interview took place in Khost in eastern Afghanistan.
Top US military chief is convinced Iranians seek atom bomb
DEBKAfile Special Report
July 20, 2008, 10:49 AM (GMT+02:00)
Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Fox News he is convinced the Iranians are seeking to building an atomic bomb, "a very destabilizing possibility in that part of the world." He stressed the US had the capacity and the reserves to attack Iran as a last resort
DEBKAfile's Washington sources stressed the special significance of Mullen's statement on Sunday, July 20. The night before, a senior Israeli security official said that if the US-Iranian talks failed, President Bush planned to use the three-month period between the November elections in America and his exit from the White House in January for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Saturday night, too, Israel's chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi arrived for a week's visit as the admiral's guest.
Mullen warned that while the US has the capacity and reserves for attacking Iran, there could be "possible unintended consequences" and an unpredictable regional impact from any attack on Iran – a hint at a dangerous backlash from a possible Israeli strike uncoordinated with the United States.
"I'm fighting two wars and I don't need a third one," said Mullen referring to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Maybe USA doesn't need a third war, but the alternative is a Nuclear armed Iran. Again what is Adm. Mullen's paradigm?

Our "Terrorist Sites" search engine has over 1,200 web sites. The search engine has Indexed over 11,700,000 web pages. Search Terrorist over 1,200 sites, forums Our estimate is that there are 5,000 terrorist related web sites. And another 1,000 secret sites.
Our G2 staff puts the number of terrorist web pages at over 60,000,000, terrorist related web pages. And growing.
60 million web pages promoting terrorism.
This suggest a Paradigm for how al Qaeda is able to regenerate, recruit suicide bombers and fund its self.
And I admit a a lazy preference to collect Terrorist web sites, and grow the list of indexed pages into the millions, because it is harder to take down terrorist web sites, and huge numbers of indexed web pages LOOKS good.
The ability to collect intelligence from these sites feels good and does contribute to our work. But the better Paradigm would be to see the number of indexedd pages decline as the terrorist web is shut down, the loss of their C2, recruiting and funding drives, and Info WAR abilities.
I understand the drive for US Intelligence agencys to want to collect intelligence. But it would be more effective to shut them down.
The preference for collecting intel vs closing them down is counter productive.
Allowing them to grow from a few hundred sites in 2002 to thousands, accounts for al Qaedas ability regenerate to continue to grow even in the face of sever attrition.
It is my desire to see the number of indexed pages decline. The sites should be copied and then shut down. We don't have the funding to undertake this operation, secure storage etc..
We are watching for the US military to start to control this domain.
We are seeing the web masters switch from Iraq to the Taliban, and in languages we can't translate, Pashtoon and Urdu.

8,000 foreign fighters in Fata ring alarm bells in Islamabad
Monday, July 21, 2008
By Hamid Mir
ISLAMABAD: In a disturbing report presented to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, days before he travels to the United States, the latest figure of foreign fighters present in the tribal areas of Pakistan is estimated to be more than 8,000 but the government is reluctant to officially confirm this number.
At a special cabinet briefing on Sunday in which Asif Ali Zardari was also present, besides the prime minister and Adviser to the Interior Ministry Rehman Malik, said the government will have to use force if the process of dialogue does not produce the results but his view was opposed by the minister from FATA Hamidullah Jan.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and his key ministers will visit Peshawar on Monday for a special meeting, which could decide the launching of a major operation against foreign fighters in Fata, Interior Ministry Adviser Rehman Malik told The News on Sunday.
but the war against radical Islamic terrorism continues, and cyberspace is among its most active fronts. The Internet is host to thousands of websites run by terrorist groups and their supporters, with Al Qaeda exerting a dominant influence on their bloodthirsty content. After September 11, as Paul Eedle observed in Jane’s Intelligence Review, Al Qaeda launched an online campaign to win the hearts and minds of the Muslim world—to advance its ideology of total war with the West and discredit those few Muslim leaders who spoke out against terrorist jihad. Today, the jihadis clearly have the advantage in Islamic cyberspace: Radical Islamist websites have proliferated,....
"Al Qaeda's use of the Internet is amazing," said Rita Katz, director of the Search for International Terrorist Entities Institute, in the New York Post. "We know from ... captured Al Qaeda fighters who say they joined up through the Internet ... that this is one of the principal ways they recruit fighters and suicide bombers."................
The Editors of The New Atlantis, "Dot-Com Terrorism," The New Atlantis, Number 5, Spring 2004, pp. 91-93.
So why are there more terrorist sites on the web today than 4 uears ago? BECAUSE THE US MILITARY HAS NOT ENGAGED THE ENEMY IN THIS DOMAIN. THE US MILITARY DOES NOT RULE THIS DOMAIN BECAUSE THEY FEAR IT, EVEN THOUGH THE TECHNOLOGY, AND MANPOWER IS AVAILABLE TO DOMINATE THE WWW.
A junior officers should be assigned to every General officer to educate them on an ongoing daily basis.
FOUR YEARS AND AL QAEDA'S C2 HAS GOTTEN STRONGER WITH EVEN MORE WEBSITES.
