    CIA confronts Pakistan

Seal of the Central Intelligence Agency of the...Image via Wikipedia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Central Intelligence Agency official travelled to Islamabad and confronted senior officials with evidence of ties between Pakistan's spy agency and militants operating in that country's tribal areas, the New York Times reported in Wednesday editions.

The CIA envoy presented information linking members of Pakistan's Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) with some militant groups responsible for a string of attacks including the suicide bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul this month which killed 58 people, the newspaper said.

The report, based on accounts by U.S. military and intelligence officials, described the decision to confront Pakistan over ISI's activities as the bluntest warning to Islamabad since shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

It was published a day after Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani visited the White House and made a commitment to U.S. President George W. Bush to secure Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

The New York Times said the CIA assessment specifically raised links between ISI members and the militant network led by Maulavi Jalaluddin Haqqani, believed by the U.S. intelligence community to have close ties to senior al Qaeda figures in Pakistan's tribal areas.

The Haqqani network and other militants operating in the tribal areas along Pakistan's Afghan border are thought to be behind increasingly deadly attacks inside Afghanistan, the newspaper said.

Gilani told PBS television in Washington on Tuesday the ISI was a "great institution" and said reports some members of the agency were sympathetic to the militants are "not believable."

"We would not allow that ... because the ISI is directly working under the Prime Minister," he told the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer in an interview.

Representatives from IDF Intelligence, Shin Bet, Mossad warn government global terror groups like al-Qaeda, which use civilian information technology to enlist, mobilizing operatives

Roni Sofer Published: 07.23.08, 19:23 / Israel News

Substantial threats to Israel, its citizens, and Jewish people all over the world exist from worldwide Jihad organizations, specifically al-Qaeda, intelligence reports discussed by the government's Security Cabinet on Wednesday stated.

    Growing Terror

Representatives from IDF Intelligence, the Shin Bet, and the Mossad said during the discussion that global Jihad constitutes a threat to all Western countries, democratic regimes, and moderate Arab nations. They also expressed fear that the worldwide organizations would develop cooperation with local extremist groups such as Hamas and Hizbullah.

The representatives also mentioned that the Jihad organizations' operatives make use of civilian infrastructures such as the internet and information technology in order to enlist and mobilize terror cells. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert directed the intelligence officials to continue their efforts in gathering information and thwarting the threats, through cooperation with other countries seeking to battle terrorism.

On Sunday Director of Military Intelligence Major-General Amos Yadlin told the cabinet that Israel's enemies have no interest in provoking any military conflict while US President George W. Bush is still in office.

The military, he warned, does believe a limited military campaign, which will probably not escalate into a full-fledged war, is possible.

Yadelin also surveyed the circumstances that could instigate terror attacks on Israel. "We have intelligence indicating terror activities are possible both on the northern and southern fronts. Hizbullah may choose to use one of their still disputed subjects, such as the Shaaba Farms or Imad Mugniyah's assassination," he told the cabinet.

As for the Iranian threat, Yadlin briefed the cabinet on the latest intelligence assessments, saying that Iran is forging ahead with its nuclear developments, despite the international community implementing some diplomatic and financial duress.

Syria, he said, is slowly by surely "escaping its international isolation, despite assisting Hizbullah. Damascus is taking several steps in order to get closer to the West, but is still very much a part of the axis of terror."

    Adm.Mullen convinced Iran seeks Nuke

Top US military chief is convinced Iranians seek atom bomb

    DEBKAfile Special Report

    July 20, 2008, 10:49 AM (GMT+02:00)

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Fox News he is convinced the Iranians are seeking to building an atomic bomb, "a very destabilizing possibility in that part of the world." He stressed the US had the capacity and the reserves to attack Iran as a last resort

DEBKAfile's Washington sources stressed the special significance of Mullen's statement on Sunday, July 20. The night before, a senior Israeli security official said that if the US-Iranian talks failed, President Bush planned to use the three-month period between the November elections in America and his exit from the White House in January for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Saturday night, too, Israel's chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi arrived for a week's visit as the admiral's guest.

Mullen warned that while the US has the capacity and reserves for attacking Iran, there could be "possible unintended consequences" and an unpredictable regional impact from any attack on Iran – a hint at a dangerous backlash from a possible Israeli strike uncoordinated with the United States.

"I'm fighting two wars and I don't need a third one," said Mullen referring to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bin Laden backs America and Israel

The :en:Via Maris (purple), King's Highway (in red), and other ancient :en:Levantine :en:trade routes, c. :en:1300 BCEImage via WikipediaAnalysis: Osama bin Laden attacks Hizballah’s Nasrallah and Shiite Iran

    May 20, 2008, 11:17 AM (GMT+02:00)

Examination of the full text of the al Qaeda leader’s second audio-taped message in three days, aired On May 18, shows him exploiting the Palestinian issue to fan the flames of the Sunni-Shiite dispute raging in Iraq and Lebanon - and carry it over to the Gaza Strip.

His 22-minute diatribe calls Arab leaders “agents of crusaders,” and “wolves,” who have stopped taking instructions from Islam and take them from the United States. The only Arab leader bin Laden singles out by name is Hizballah’s secretary general Hassan Nasrallah.

He says: He claimed [in starting the 2006 Lebanon War] that he had enough resources, such as money and combatants, to fight Israel. “But the truth is the opposite.” Al Qaeda’s leader asks: “If he were honest and had enough resources, why then did he not support the fight to liberate Palestinian?”

Bin Laden also attacked Nasrallah for allowing the deployment of UN peacekeepers in South Lebanon “to protect the Jews.”

The Sunni terrorist chief went on to lambast Shiite Iran for its efforts to dominate the Middle East.

The message, released to mark Israel’s 60th anniversary, pandered to anger in the Arab world over US president George W. Bush’s fulsome praise of Israel. He called on Muslims to ignore the Islamic prohibition against raising arms against fellow Muslims, pointing to the kings and leaders who “sacrificed Palestine and al Aqsa to keep their crowns.” They have decided that peace with the Zionists is their strategic option, “so damn their decision,” bin Laden said.

DEBKAfile’s terror experts note that, without saying so, Osama bin Laden has fetched up in for the first time in the same corner as the United States, Israel and Sunni Arab governments in opposing Iran’s attempts to dominate Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
