The biggest search engine ?

Menlo Park based Cuil will launch later this evening with an index of 120 billion web pages, making them arguably the most comprehensive search engine on the web (Google doesn’t disclose the size of their index, although they claim to know about a trillion unique web pages) (Update: see our very early testing here). They’ve also dropped one of the “l’s” from their name - previously the company was “Cuill.” Either way, it’s pronounced “cool.”

The super-stealth search project was founded by highly respected search experts. Husband and wife team Tom Costello (CEO) and Anna Patterson (VP Engineering) were joined by Russell Power. Patterson and Power are also ex-Google employees, and the company has been the subject of intense speculation over the last couple of years.

Much of the secret sauce of Cuil is in the way they index the web and handle actual queries by users. Both are costly to scale, and Cuil claims to have found a way to massively reduce those costs. That allows them to run the search engine a lot cheaper, even at Google-scale should it ever reach that point. By some estimates, Google spends a billion dollars a year to run the back end infrastructure of it’s search business.

Terrorist Math, 60 million pages and growing.

Our "Terrorist Sites" search engine has over 1,200 web sites.
The search engine has Indexed over 11,700,000 web pages.

Our estimate is that there are 5,000 terrorist related web sites.
And another 1,000 secret sites.

Our G2 staff puts the number of terrorist web pages at over 60,000,000, terrorist related web pages. And growing.

60 million web pages promoting terrorism.

This suggest a Paradigm for how al Qaeda is able to regenerate, recruit suicide bombers and fund its self.

And I admit a a lazy preference to collect Terrorist web sites, and grow the list of indexed pages into the millions, because it is harder to take down terrorist web sites, and huge numbers of indexed web pages LOOKS good.

The ability to collect intelligence from these sites feels good and does contribute to our work.
But the better Paradigm would be to see the number of indexedd pages decline as the terrorist web is shut down, the loss of their C2, recruiting and funding drives, and Info WAR abilities.

I understand the drive for US Intelligence agencys to want to collect intelligence.
But it would be more effective to shut them down.

The preference for collecting intel vs closing them down is counter productive.

Allowing them to grow from a few hundred sites in 2002 to thousands, accounts for
al Qaedas ability regenerate to continue to grow even in the face of sever attrition.

It is my desire to see the number of indexed pages decline.
The sites should be copied and then shut down.
We don't have the funding to undertake this operation, secure storage etc..

We are watching for the US military to start to control this domain.

We are seeing the web masters switch from Iraq to the Taliban, and in languages
we can't translate, Pashtoon and Urdu.

I was out trying to take some photos of the fireflies, and watching all the lights blink on and off,
it remended me of the al Qaeda hackers and webmasters.

al Qaeda's Internet paradigm is almost 180 degrees from the US Military's Internet paradigm.

aQ views the WWW as the ultimate weapon and communications channel.
aQ fireflies wink on and demonstrate the new paradigm, and aQ embraces it and has a party.

In the USA the WWW is viewed like a threat or security risk. Something they would like to avoid if possible.

One of my staff was posting on a Military forum about cyber war and the use of WWW as a weapon.
This was the comment emailed to Gerald.

"yeah i read the whole thing, they were a hard audience. They seemed to be more concerned with naming things and theoretical aspects of it all whilst you are a man of action gerald. Combine that with a new concept of operations, as you state gerald, and I don't think they have their heads around the actions you and the wiki are taking." A well know Blogger.

The Internet is one weapons level above WMDs. Our paradigm is classified. G
It offers the potential to win a war with out violence.
It's uses as "Force protection", "Force projection", and a "Force multiplier" are understood by the al Qaeda movement.

And still being discovered by US Forces.

US Forces keep the WWW at arms length away like some bad odor, while al Qaeda wears the WWW like it was cologne.

The American historical paradigm has been one of ignoring a threat until we are hit hard then America pours in resources like a tidal wave to over come the weakness.

Its cheaper and safer to dominate all domains.

The "Future of Wars Paradigm" plays heavily on the use of the Internet by the antagonist, and is Americas weakest link.

At the current time USA is unprepared and ill trained to fight in this domain.
And remains so at Great risk to the country.

Leaving up their PUBLIC command and control.
Leaving up their propaganda, running 24/7
Leaving up their public recruiting .
Leaving up the links for funding?
We have found sites with phone numbers, even bank account numbers for Public donating to terrorists.
Leaving up their lies, heinous violence videos, beheadings, executions.

THAT HAS ALL WORKED WELL.

SURRENDERING THE INTERNET TO aL QAEDA HAS WORKED WONDERS.

TAKING DOWN HUGE NUMBERS IS A Strategic weapon!!!

If it wasn't for the Internet al Qaeda would have went the way of so many other
terrorists groups, oblivion.

The Military leaders that think the WWW doesn't matter or isn't important in the GWOT
need to be replaced.

The WWW allows al Qaeda to survive.

To sell their contorted view of Islam world wide, to independent self actualizing CELLS.

And some counter terrorism "EXPERT" SAYS:
"shutting down Web sites, but it doesn't really work as a strategic weapon against al-Qaeda."

Is the Military's feat of the Internet endemic?

If we carry the current pardign forward, we have what 12,ooo or 24,000 terrorists sites the USA is ignoring?


Or maybe they are collecting valuable intel from these sites?

The argument seems to be leave the terrorist sites up to collect Intel,
Well the total number have grown to over 4,000. sites.
And the sites are recruiting others and the number of sites continue to grow.

This paradigm will insure the growth of Jahiddie sites, at what point do they put stopping recruitment ahead of intel gathering?

Feels like the cart before the horse.

What if the WWW went down?

What if you got "Server not found"
on all sites for weeks or months?

If bot nets hit the Internet Hubs, from millions of zombie pc's.
And key cables were cut?

Internet not accessable,
Cell phones not working,
Land lines dead.
Cable TV out.
Run on local banks.

Walmart with empty shelves.
Stock markets closing.
Food stores empty shelves?

Gas stations closing.

And it would trickle on and on, as businesses and Government try to set up non-internet communications.
Set up non Internet Banking, and Federal reserve flooding banks with cash trying to
avoid a run,

You might want to have a short wave radio and CB radios.
That would allow minimal government communications to
contact the populations.

Not a bad idea to have in a 3 month supply of food and meds.

We are not trying to scare you but point out an unplaned for possibility.
You don't believe your house is giing to burn down but you still have Insurance.

A little internet insurance in this world of 5th generation warfare is not un reasonable.
Do some planning while the net is still there.

Looking to make a little extra money while at college in 2003, Ivan Maksakov, then 22, devised an inventive, entrepreneurial scheme that probably sounded good at the time: He created a botnet to engage in DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks and then blackmailed online gambling sites based in the U.K., threatening to take the sites down during major sporting events.

However, Maksakov -- a student at the Balakov Institute of Engineering, Technology, and Management -- couldn't anticipate that the Russian government, looking to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with cybercriminals, would make an example of him.

The botnet, based in Houston, was directed to launch DDoS attacks against the U.K.-based bookmaking Web sites and online casinos only if Maksakov's demands weren't met. According to Russian news reports, Maksakov, along with co-conspirators Alexander Petrov and Denis Stepanov, attacked nine Web sites
