The United States, Pakistan andAfghanistan will begin regular, trilateral meetings after sessions held among the three nations here this week, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced yesterday.

Talks over the past three days "would have been valuable even if they had simply been bilateral," Clinton said in remarks with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangeen Dadfar Spanta and his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mahmood Qureshi. But the meetings were "especially meaningful" because "we have all been working together," she said, adding that the governments will come together again in late April or early May.

The unprecedented trilateral talks were part of a U.S. effort to encourage cooperation between the neighboring governments over terrorist inroads in both countries. They came as the Obama administration is conducting a strategic review of the foundering Afghan war effort and of its policies toward Afghanistan and Pakistan.

More than 10,000 Taliban insurgents operating in Afghanistan: official

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Afghanistan's Interior Minister Hanif Atmar said here on Friday that some 10,000 to 15,000 Taliban militants are operating in up to 17 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces in the country.

    Apart from many Afghans who were recruited for economic reasons, most of the insurgents were foreigners operating with Al-Qaida or Central Asian extremist groups, Atmar told reporters.

    Atmar, who is here for a three-way dialogue with the United States and Pakistan on a new "war on terror" strategy, denied the saying that insurgents are rampant. "Terrorist attacks do not represent their strength but indeed their weakness," the minister said.

    U.S. President Barack Obama, who vowed to beef up effort to battle against extremism in Afghanistan, has authorized a 17,000 troop increase for war in the country.

Rocket attack by Taliban kills 10 in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Up to ten people were killed in a rocket attack by Taliban in northwest Pakistan on Monday, according to private DAWN NEWS TV channel.

The rocket attack targeted the house of a local member of provincial assembly (MPA) in Swat valley in North West Frontier Province.

As a result of the attack, MPA Waqar Ahmed's brother and other family members were killed, according to DAWN NEWS.

The Bajaur chapter of a militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Sunday unilaterally ceased fire with security forces and offered peace talks with the government. However, Pakistani government rejected their offer.

The Taliban have the upper hand and should be put on the list of banned organizations in Pakistan, said Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Co-Chairman and presidential candidate Zardari in a interview with a foreign media on Sunday.

I looked at the pics of the damage, very little charring, no craters, almost certainly they were Katyusha rockets. They are coming in from Uzbekistan, sold from the Russian Army for heroin. They were using them over the Durand Line but our return fire was so effective they largely stopped. The launchers are hard to come by so they don't use them on us very often.

They have a range of about 28 km., 6 kg. warhead, very accurate at 4-5 km. Been around since 1941. Likely also it was mainly a mortar attack.

to support the Taliban. But may not be a big problem. Target troops and supplies

as they cross the border into Paki and Afghan. And Iran will have its hands full

June 6: The Pakistan government has agreed to release 64 militants loyal to Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah, popularly referred to as Mulla Radio, as part of a peace deal with the local Taliban.

The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) government has agreed to free detained Taliban militants loyal to Maulana Fazlullah in three phases, with at least 64 militants to be released in the first phase, a government official said.

The new deal is the follow-up of an accord struck between the Swat Taliban and the government last month.

In the 15-point deal reached last month, the militants agreed to halt suicide attacks and bombing on security forces and government installations. In exchange, the government promised the release of local Taliban militants arrested during military operations and imposition of Nizam-e-Adl.

Pakistani troops also agreed to withdraw from the restive South Waziristan areas when local Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud will free captured Army and paramilitary personnel.

The Inevitable Pak-Afghan Union

THE US and its allies occupy both Afghanistan and Pakistan. The only difference is that the former is under the direct military occupation as a result of full-scale war waged against its former government. Pakistan, on the other hand, suffers from partial occupation. Unlike Hamid Karzai, the US forces have not waged a war to install General Musharraf. Nevertheless, compared to Afghanistan, the US can achieve its objectives more freely and conveniently in Pakistan. Along these full and partial occupations, natural resources, strategic positions, Pakistan’s nuclear capability and various other factors within and outside Pakistan and Afghanistan are pushing these countries are at work to somehow alter their present status.

Whatever may be the outcome, one can safely say that Pakistan and Afghanistan will not remain as two states on the world map for too long. Almost all the visible forces are engaged in somehow disintegrating these states. The invisible forces, nevertheless, are brining these countries towards an ultimate unification - towards the formation of a greater Afghanistan. A thorough analysis reveals that results of the visible forces, working for disintegrating these states, would also indirectly lead to strengthen position of the forces invisibly leading these states towards unification.

LAHORE: The Punjab University (PU) Institute of Business Administration (IBA) students on Friday showed their inclination towards Taliban and their policies.

They pitched a camp and named it Taliban on the annual sports day. Their shirts also carried statements in favour of Taliban. They said Taliban were working for a ‘great cause’, but the world had not been able to understand the spirit behind their sacrifices.

They also arranged an airgun shooting competition for female students. During the shooting competition a student was also injured. Students also decorated their stalls with posters of guns and also kept a fundraising box for Taliban on the stall. A female student said Taliban were fighting for a ‘great cause’. She said it was the need of the hour that students should know problems faced by the Muslim world.

Rizwan, a student, said, “Taliban are great warriors. We are raising funds for Taliban. Pakistanis think that Taliban are behind suicide bombings, but it is not true.”( Deet ta dee ) Asim, a student, said, “We are not affiliated with any political or religious party, but we praise Taliban for their bravery.” ( Stupidity, ak47 against the USA Military, how 'Deet da dee', do you have to be to bite at the US Army's buzz saw blade? )IBA Director Dr Ehsan Malik said, “I have no qualms if a group of students choose the word Taliban for their team.”

PU Registrar Dr Naeem said no one was allowed to launch a campaign for Taliban. He said the Taliban camp was merely part of the sports day. ( And in the Talibans future these Taliban students will be suicide bombing the Mosques and funerals, buses. )

Free elections in Pakistan Feb. 18 were to be the first step in bringing a dysfunctional nuclear power back to democratic stability. The preliminary first step was a deal with the pro-al-Qaida Taliban chief in the tribal areas. The new Pakistani army chief of staff, Gen.

Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani, and the "amir" of Tehrik-e-Taliban-Pakistan, Baitullah Mehsud, agreed to a cease-fire, as well as the withdrawal of the Pakistani army from South Waziristan, one of the seven tribal agencies along the Afghan border (known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas).

As a result, to mark election day there was "only" one political assassination in Lahore, 24 terrorist incidents in the rest of the country, including two deadly attacks on election rallies in the Northwest Frontier province, the ambush of a Pakistani army convoy withdrawing from North Waziristan in which a major was killed -- all done by extremist groups that are not part of Mehsud's Taliban organization.

The election results, as expected, produced enough votes for the two largest parties -- the late Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) -- to form a coalition.

Only one small problem: Neither one was willing to work with President Pervez Musharraf, who got himself re-elected by the outgoing National Assembly, which had been rigged originally in his favor. Musharraf said he planned to serve out his term until 2012.

Democratic stability took a turn for the worse as Asif Zardari, Bhutto's widower, and Sharif conferred on how they could bring about the impeachment of Musharraf without a parliamentary majority. Sharif, who had been deposed by Musharraf in 1999 and exiled to Saudi Arabia for 10 years, now let it be known he favored A.Q. Khan, the notorious nuclear black marketer, as Musharraf's successor.

As the father of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, Khan is arguably Pakistan's most popular idol since the foundation of the republic 61 years ago.

After U.S. intelligence produced the proof of how Khan had sold nuclear know-how to America's enemies -- notably North Korea and Iran -- Musharraf administered Khan a slight tap on the wrist: a public confession in English on television and confined to house arrest, but allowed to keep the loot. He is now confined to Pakistan and not allowed to travel abroad.

Living in Paki $2 a day.

On a rain-drenched road in Rawalpindi men, women and children stand patiently behind a truck. It's a few kilometers from the park where Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was slain four weeks ago. And the street is covered in sodden party political paraphernalia proclaiming elections next month. But voting and Bhutto are the last things on these people's minds. Like much of the country they are queuing for bread.

"A 20 kilo bag used to cost 250 ( $4.o8 usd ) Rupees; now it's 295," says Rashid Nabil, a sack of flour on his shoulder. "I have to buy one of these three times a month to feed the eight people in my family. I earn 4,000 ( $65 usd )Rupees a month. That's a lot of your income to be spending on bread"...

Pakistan is in the midst of its worst bread famine in 40 years. The shortage has been exacerbated by massive power and gas outages. Coupled with the pall cast by Bhutto's assassination -- and what seems an endless toll of political violence (the latest being the murder of 12 people by a suicide bomber at a Shia mosque in Peshawar on 17 January) -- the mood among Pakistanis is as leaden as the winter sky.....

Most know why there is a bread shortage in Pakistan, including the poor. Smugglers and hoarders, capitalizing on record global wheat prices, have found it more profitable to send wheat and flour abroad than to meet domestic needs at home. This is why you will find Pakistani flour in Kabul and Delhi but not in Peshawar. Despite a bumper crop the government was compelled to import wheat, jacking up prices still more....

Of Pakistan's 160 million citizens, 65 million live beneath a poverty line of $2 a day and another 65 million live barely above it. Most hale from rural villages but some, like Rashid Nidal and Javed Hansraj, eke out livings on the margins of cities. Historically the poor don't vote in Pakistan.

Paki: Kite flying is a game of death

Tahir for action against police for not stopping kite flying

LAHORE: Senior lawyer MD Tahir has filed a civil miscellaneous application before the Lahore High Court, seeking registration of criminal cases against the police officials for failing to implement the kite-flying ban.

He said one Munib Muhammad, 7, fell from the roof of his house in Kamoke on January 16, 2008 while flying a kite and died. He said kites and strings were being sold in markets despite the ban.

Tahir said after the 'illegal removal' of chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, kite flying had been continuing unbridled. He said the former chief justice had ensured the ban on kite flying. "Kite flying is a game of death and the present interim government is also fond of it," he alleged.

For the second day in a row, Pakistani troops abandoned an army base in South Waziristan, a region along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border that is a stronghold for militants. And this time, the militants didn't even attack.

One hundred frontier troops in the Chagmalai Fort received threats from militants and apparently decided it was a better idea to flee than to stay and defend themselves, an intelligence source and local residents told ABC News. The fort was filled with heavy weaponry, including artillery guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The extremists have selected the police and the army, two important pillars of the Pakistani state, as particular targets. (When does the Army target them? g )

Last week, rockets were fired at an army barracks in Warsak on the city's perimeter, a warning of the power of the militants to strike from Mohmand, a district in the tribal areas adjacent to Peshawar, an area that a few months ago was considered free of the Taliban.

The army headquarters in the center of the city were struck last month by a bomber who was hiding explosives under her burqa that were set off by remote control. The assassination a year ago of the police chief, Mr. Saad, who was killed while on duty trying to control a religious procession in one of the bazaars, shook the city.

"It's asymmetrical warfare against an established state," said Muhammad Sulaman Khan, chief of operations for the Peshawar police and a close friend of Mr. Saad. "The terrorists only don't have to lose it, we need to win it."

ISLAMABAD: The Interior Ministry has warned law enforcement agencies that activists of the defunct Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) and Taliban militants plan to attack eminent political and religious leaders and religious places in nine cities during Muharram, Daily Times learnt on Monday.

“Yes, we have received these threats,” said acting Islamabad police Inspector General Nadeem Baloch.

Two intelligence reports received by the ministry said attacks were likely in Islamabad, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Vehari, Jhang, Hyderabad, Karachi, DI Khan and Quetta.

A notification by the National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) of the Interior Ministry said militants would try to attack Muharram processions, Imambargahs and Majalis.

The intelligence reports say Senator Abid Hussain, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid ex-MNA from Jhang Waqas Akram Sheikh and Allama Sajid Naqvi are likely targets. Three jackets meant for suicide attacks have been delivered to LJ activists in Jhang, they say.

Militants: According to the reports, 300 militants from tribal areas, including local and Afghan Taliban, have been assigned targets and sent to the settled areas.

Following the circulation of the notice to the home secretaries and the provincial police chiefs, law enforcement agencies are on high alert. District police officers have been directed to devise security plans to ensure peace during Muharram.
