WASHINGTON (AP) -- Enough processed uranium to make six nuclear weapons was secretly transported thousands of miles by truck, rail and ship on a monthlong trip from a research reactor in Budapest, Hungary, to a facility in Russia so it could be more closely protected against theft, U.S. officials revealed Wednesday.

The shipment, conducted under tight secrecy and security, included a three-week trip by cargo ship through the Mediterranean, up the English Channel and the North Sea to Russia's Arctic seaport of Murmansk, the only port Russia allows for handling nuclear material.

The 13 radiation-proof casks, each weighing 17,000 pounds, arrived by rail at the secure nuclear material facility at Mayak in Siberia on Wednesday, carrying 341 pounds of weapons-usable uranium, said Kenneth Baker, a National Nuclear Security Administration official who oversaw the complex project.

It is the largest recovery to date of highly enriched uranium provided either by the former Soviet Union or the United States under a program, begun in the 1950s, aimed at spreading the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The two countries have been working to return the spent fuel from reactors around the world because at many of the facilities, including the one in Budapest, security is lax, raising the possibility of the material being stolen by terrorists.

"It was a big shipment, the biggest one we've ever done," Baker said in an interview with The Associated Press hours after he received word that the shipment had arrived at its final destination in Russia. "It was basically enough to make six nuclear weapons."

Under the U.S.-Russian program, the NNSA, which is part of theEnergy Department, has completed 15 recoveries of U.S.-origin highly enriched uranium from research reactors in more than a dozen countries since 2005. The agency also was involved in three earlier shipments of Russian-origin highly enriched uranium that were removed from the Czech Republic, Latvia and Bulgaria and returned to Russia.

In Budapest "they had a fence and a guard," said Baker, although some security improvements have been made with U.S. help over the past year. Still, Baker added, "you don't want to leave it there."

Or that USA was planning on removing it.

or knew about the transfer.

Wasn't so secret after all.

So as we see the US Government knew about the al Qaeda interest well before the move.

al Qaeda decided they couldn't mount an operation big enough to have any possibility of success during transfer.

Or it was moved before they could mount an attack.

Either way its safe now.

We investigate the reaction mechanism, the nuclear structure, the features of nucleon-nucleon interaction inside the nuclei at low and medium energies and the behaviour of the high temperature and high density nuclear matter at higher energies. Talbi KNEW, Harry was there, not likely.

TALIBAN fanatics knew Prince Harry was in Afghanistan and planned to capture and kill him, it was claimed last night.

Commander Mullah Abdul Karim said he was told in December or early January that “an important chicken” had joined British troops.

Karim, speaking from Helmand province where Harry was fighting, said: “He is our special enemy. Our first option was to capture him as a prisoner. The second, to kill him.”

Karim claimed fanatics had reported possible sightings of Harry in their area on several occasions, but his fighters never got close enough.

Harry’s tour of duty had been scheduled to last until April but it ended abruptly on Thursday after an American internet site revealed his whereabouts.

Karim said: “He may be a Prince but he didn’t have a Prince’s heart. He proved as cruel and brutal as other British soldiers, bombing and shelling innocent Afghans and Taliban.”

Karim’s claims will add to the debate over the usefulness of the British media’s news blackout over Harry’s deployment.

Harry, 23, deployed to Helmand as a battlefield air controller (known as a JTAC) in December, was constantly shadowed by three SAS bodyguards.

A team of Gurkhas from Nepal, who are notoriously fierce fighters, were also on hand when he went out on patrol.

The SAS were with him when he touched down in Kandahar in December and watched over him for the next 10 weeks.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Feb. 3 -- A Libyan al-Qaeda commander who was killed last week in northwestern Pakistan had lived there for years and, despite a $200,000 U.S. bounty on his head, felt secure enough to meet officials and visit hospitals, according to officials and residents of this city.

As he organized suicide bombings and other attacks in neighboring Afghanistan, Abu Laith al-Libi found a comfortable refuge in Pakistan's border region, the sources said in interviews. He met openly with a Pakistani politician and a Libyan diplomat and called on foreign fighters recovering from their wounds.

The Pakistani government contends it has been doing everything possible to capture al-Qaeda figures within its borders. But Libi, who was killed in a missile attack last week, moved unchallenged around the heart of Peshawar, a city of about 1.2 million people, underscoring how freely he and other al-Qaeda leaders have been able to operate in Pakistan.

One day in 2006, Libi strode into the central prison in Peshawar, the administrative capital of North-West Frontier Province. As another Libyan fighter sat nearby behind bars -- in the custody of Pakistani authorities -- Libi, the politician and the Libyan diplomat argued over whether the man should be deported against his wishes to Libya or released to fight another day, according to Javed Ibrahim Paracha, the politician who helped arrange the meeting.

"I knew Abu Laith for quite some time," said Paracha, a former member of the Pakistan National Assembly who is running for a parliamentary seat again in elections this month.
