    Ahmadinejad kicks butt !!

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Columbia University President Lee Bollinger excoriated Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday, going through a long list of documented actions and remarks by the firebrand Iranian leader and his government.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks Monday at Columbia University in New York.

"Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator," Bollinger said to applause from many of the 600 people in the room for a speech from the Iranian leader.

Bollinger cited the Iranian government's "brutal crackdown" on dissidents, public executions, executions of minors and other actions.

And he assailed Ahmadinejad's "denying" of the Holocaust as "ridiculous" and "dangerous propaganda." He called the Iranian leader either brazenly provocative "or astonishingly uneducated."

"The truth is that the Holocaust is the most documented event in human history," he said.

He said he doubted Ahmadinejad would show the intellectual courage to answer the questions before him.

    Ahmadinejad responded quickly.

"We don't think it's necessary before the speech is given to come in with some series of claims," the Iranian leader said.

He said Bollinger's comments included "insults" and false claims, and flew in the face of an environment that's supposed to let people speak their minds.

On the Holocaust, Ahmadinejad asked why history can't be questioned and further researched.

"If the Holocaust is a reality of our time, a history that occurred, why is there not sufficient research that can approach the topic from different perspectives?" he asked.

The Iranian leader has made statements in the past suggesting that Israel be politically "wiped off the map," though he insists that can be accomplished without violence. See some of Ahmadinejad's controversial remarks ยป

While he would not respond with a "yes" or "no" when asked Monday if he sought the destruction of Israel, he said the status of Israel should be determined by a free election.

"Let the people of Palestine freely choose what they want for their future," he said.

Asked about widely documented government abuse of women and homosexuals in his country, Ahmadinejad said, "We don't have homosexuals" in Iran. "I don't know who told you we had it," he said.

    FAST THINKER, GOOD DEBATER.

HE USED SIMPLE INDIRECT ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS TO MAKE HIMSELF LOOK VERY REASONABLE.

HE DIDN'T SPEAK LONG ENOUGH TO GET PINNED DOWN ON ANYTHING..

DANCED VERY NICELY, AROUND QUESTIONS AND TRIED TO IGNORE PARTS OF QUESTIONS, LIKE THE GAY EXECUTIONS, HE REPLIED THEY HAD NO GAYS.

HE DID A GOOD JOB, HE EVEN WAITED AT THE END TILL SOMEONE CAME OVER AND SHOOK HIS HAND.

    VERY SHARP AND WELL REHEARSED.

BUT WATCH HIM DO SOME CULTURAL LYING, NO GAYS, YOU CAN SEE HOW WELL HE LIES.

Bollinger the Univ. President was very unprofessional to invite him then call Ahmadinejad names. Embarrassment to the University.

    Watch him lie:

I must admit that I originally believed allowing Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia University was a bad idea. Now I'm not so sure. I think shining a light on this nutjob, in such a highly publicized forum, allows more people to realize how dangerous he is. Most people are intelligent enough to see right through his evasive responses. I was relieved to see Lee Bollinger confront Ahmadinejad. He didn't "call him names". He simply pointed out the facts.

Dude u dont understand farsi. He said we dont have homosexuals like you do here" means the homosexuals like the ones in America with their posturing demand for rights. He didnt say No Homosexual in Iran.

It got lost in translation by the person. Again u getting nutty over polemics.

I think you have it all wrong. Anyone who read the CNN coverage (or even your interpretation of it the event) would get the feeling that Ahmadinejad is disingenuous.

I came to your blog thinking, "Oh good, someone will post the actual text of Ahmadinejad's responses." CNN's coverage hardly included anything. But then neither do you! What, did this speech last 30 seconds? Didn't he have ANYTHING to say?

And to the remark that it was disrespectful for the President to come out swinging -- Hello these are totally justified comments, and even you implied that Ahmadinejad might have been expecting them. Apparently the man doesn't have much ammunition to defend his image! Where is the retort?

lee bollinger comments were quite harsh and unnecessary - but did anyone notice tht CNN did not cover ahmadinejad's speech at all and focused more on Lee's crap while the speech was being aired live? - restricting viewers to even listen to what he was saying
what happened to unbiased journalism and free speech - CNN and american polititians dump their view on everyone as usual. i always thought of ahmadinejad as a dictator - but after hearing his persepctive i doubt it - maybe he was lying today, i am not an expert - but CNN atleast should have aired his speech live. about homosexuality - in most of the eastern coutries (if any of CNN's journalist has ever been out of US thy ll know) homosexuality is very rare including india, pakistan, china? so there is nothign to laugh at! these countries are more conservative about sexuality forget Homosexuality - nobody even talks about sex - but that does not mean that there are no homosexuals, but at the same time it is hard that you will come across one. moreover if u ask my mom she still does not believe that there are homosexuals in this world! lol! so ahmadinejad is not alone to think so - :)

Lee Bollinger's opening statements were sickening to me, not because I am a supporter of Ahmadinejad, but because I am an American who hates to see guests treated that way. What was the point of Columbia inviting Ahmadinejad and then insulting him right during the introduction? What was Bollinger trying to accomplish? With his comments, he definitely did not make any inroads towards world peace, but rather once again demonstrated America's ignorance and arrogance.

If there was ever a chance of ending the hostilities between the two countries, today's comments by Bollinger killed that chance. Bollinger must have dreams of becoming the next Secretary of State, but he missed a few lessons in protocol. You do not invite a guest to your house to slap them in the face. Bollinger's actions made a martyr out of a tyran.

The real loser was Columbia's President. In one misguided tirade, Bollinger rallied support in Iran for Ahmajinedad, demonstrated a lack of anything approaching good manners and exemplified what people in many parts of the world see - a rude, bullying 'ugly American', who is unable to listen. Shame on Bollinger !

Dr. Joyce, well said. I did not think that it was appropriate to invite him to give him the forum to spill his insults; but once he is an invited guest, it is not right to insult him the way bollinger did. Bollinger is a dilemma in his actions.
erin lee called him a government lackey which I think a lot of people would laugh. A liberal university president an agent for the right wing government? It is not unusual for the free thinkers to attribute all ills to the government; but this is, well, too much cool aid drinking.

Bollinger got his ass handed down to him. Took a lot of balls from someone like Ahmadinejad to come on stage amongst a hostile introduction and for him to answer those questions.

All Bollinger did was make baseless accusations. Ahmednejad did not deny holocaust but said that like all things in life, it must be researched.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech that people cannot even express their views.

Ok, anonymous...you are missing the point. Bolligner called him out and for someone who seeks to be sincere in the eyes of Islam and the text of the Quran wasn't.

The interpretation of homosexuals linguistically isn't the point. The point is that they are executed just being homosexual. Children are executed...address the real issues not semantics. Are you moving to Iran? Are you this man champion. Persia was once a beautiful and rich society. The writings of Omar Khayam are rich, the relgion of the B'hai is rich but they are persecuted there.

Lee, how can Bolliger respond like an uneducated fool when he is stating documented facts against someone who questions the facts of the Holocaust. The previous present of Iran was much better...this guy may just be Napolean in stature all over again but he is a lousy strategist.

It was interesting that someone asked Ahmadinejad why Iran was supplying arms to Hezbollah or Iraqi insurgents. Let's admit one thing, as Alan Greenspan has already expressed it. England, USA and France are the crusaders of the 21st century, who do not mind killing and raping millions for their own economical interest. So far, the Iraq war killed 600,000 Iraqi's but American idol makes a bigger news here. Do you understand arragont but ignorant Joe, why the Middle East hates your guts and why Iran is seen as the leader of resentment.

"Lee Bollinger is an idiot, a government lackey, and cannot think for himself"

You are correct on the first count, but a government lackey? Come on. He made the horrible decision to invite Ahmadinejad to speak, and then felt the pinch from alumni who threatened to (and probably still will) cut off donations to the university because of this.

Then he proceeded to attack Ahmadinejad (on legitimate grounds), but came off looking like a mincing fool.

He was merely doing some 11th hour damage control to save his own backside.

Mr. Bollinger just represented the few Americans who decided to put George W. Bush in office for another 4 years in the last election.

When you invite someone you cannot go about being biased and take a charge on the guest, especially if you are planning on having a liberal educational forum for students to learn from... The idea of inviting someone over to take out your personal grudge & to take sides of the people who were against the idea was not very wise and quite frankly was a dumb idea.

I personally think throughout the meeting Ahmadinejad was much more polite in his speech than all the boo's and Bollingers Bully tacts

What do you all think about the conspicuous small amount of negative remarks about Iran and Ahmadi Nejad in today's UN speech? Do you think since Bollinger went overboard yesterday, President Bush was advised to minimize those today and had to pick on other countries?
