Up to 25 feet away from the scanning platform.
Standing outside the scanner box, You are scanned.
Note people standing out side the scan box
show up, if you go near the scanner you get scanned.

I wonder about the safety? Back scatter radiation?

I remember as a kid seeing them hose down kids

on TV with DDT dust ( Banned insecticide world wide ) 
saying it was completly safe.
